The liberal arts are brushed off as useless by many in the United States, but go abroad and you'll find newly founded, vibrant universities in Africa, India, Vietnam, India, Singapore and China that are drawing talented students. Why are we seeing these academic start-ups and should U.S. higher ed leaders be taking a lesson from them? That's to be discussed in a May 15 online conversation with the authors of a new book, "The New Global Universities: Reinventing Education in the 21st Century." What does it take to found a university? In "The New Global Universities: Reinventing Education in the 21st Century," Bryan Penprase and Noah Pickus explore that question through case studies of eight new institutions across four continents, examining practical challenges, adaptive strategies, and the occasional friction between academic culture and entrepreneurial vision. Penprase is a visiting scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and vice president for sponsored research and external academic relations, as well as professor of physics and astronomy, at Soka University of America. Pickus is associate provost at Duke University, with responsibilities in academic strategy, global initiatives, educational innovation, and policy engagement.
