Congratulations to Massachusetts Department of Transportation for being the first state in the nation to undertake a study, measuring how much direct vision is available to drivers who make up the state and municipal fleets. It also develops a process to partner with contractors to measure their vehicles and considers countermeasures that may be appropriate for large vehicles with different blind zone sizes. Direct vision is the ability of a driver to see outside their vehicle without the aid of an indirect vision device, such as mirrors or camera displays, in order to prevent crashes, especially with people walking or biking. Direct vision enables eye contact between a driver and a vulnerable road user near the vehicle. Indirect vision generally does not. Intramotev’s primary focus is developing zero-emission battery-electric self-propelled rail cars out of its location in north St. Louis, fewer than five miles from UMSL’s campus. “When you look at what we’re doing, a lot of people’s response is ‘Why doesn’t this already exist?’” Luchini said. “That’s how we know when we’re at the right time and place to make these technologies and implement them. It’s a massive opportunity to complement what rail has been doing well for the last 200 years and provide it with technologies that will help it compete for another 200 years. As a pedestrian/biker, it's a little sad to see that only 5% of Americans consider biking to be their top priority in transportation safety improvements, but I get it. Although, one finding I'm happy to share from a study for MITRE by The Harris Poll, is that the current and expected future use of hybrid/electric vehicles is on the rise between generations, with 49% of Boomers having used or expecting to use them increasing up to 79% of Gen Z.
