Some good news as satellite remote sensing continues to advance our knowledge and understanding of these iconic species of the ice. WWF-UK has supported this international study for many years. It is clear that Emperor penguins face a slippery slope towards extinction unless we limit global warming to within 1.5C and protect their habitat from human disturbance. #climatechange #climateaction #antarctica #penguin #wwf

Study after study showed the breakdown of climate systems taking place much earlier than foreseen, with potentially catastrophic results. The new element here is the pace of melting – a tripling compared to last century. Previous studies have already found the full west Antarctic ice sheet, which is protected by the ice shelves and would push up global sea levels by five metres if entirely lost, could be doomed to collapse in the much longer term.

Drilling on the edge: Daring ‘James Bond’ mission to drill Antarctic ice cores could reveal future of sea level rise. To understand the vulnarable glaciers holding back meters of sea level rise, climate scientists swoop in to extract ice from Antarctica’s remote and stormy west coast. https://lnkd.in/d3RG8fU4

❄A new iceberg, measuring about 145 square miles, has broken away from Brunt Ice Shelf, Antarctica. ❄The Brunt Ice Shelf is where UK's Halley research station is located, and is the third such event in the past three years. In 2017, due to concerns over ice instability, the British Antarctic Survey relocated Halley’s buildings on skis to a safer location. ❄The increasing activity and rapid loss of ice from the Brunt Ice Shelf over the past three years has triggered a rapid acceleration in the shelf's seaward movement, and such icebergs can trigger a navigation hazard. ❄Satellite imagery and GPS has tracked this movement, showing that such climate research is vital in understanding sudden and major changes in Antarctic ice shelves. ❄Join our research database at Expedition Science to be a part of the action for climate change: https://lnkd.in/eViqWcC2

Scientists are working on an unusual plan to prevent Antarctic glaciers from catastrophic melting. They want to build a set of giant underwater curtains in front of ice sheets to protect them from being eroded by warm sea water. Here's an overview from The Guardian: #antartica #polarice #climatechange #adaptation https://lnkd.in/gC8YfeX7

🌊 The coral reefs in the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans are facing their most severe bleaching event on record. Why does this matter? When reefs bleach, it's a sign that the crucial symbiotic algae within coral polyps is dying off. This can spell trouble, leading to illnesses and even the demise of coral polyps themselves. Scientists are alarmed by the increasing severity and frequency of coral bleaching events, driven by climate change. And if we don't act to curb warming, this could trigger a domino effect of destruction. From the organisms reliant on coral reefs, to the phytoplankton that nourish fish populations, to the very fish humanity relies on for food — everyone's at risk. Thankfully, satellites orbiting Earth 🛰️ are on the case, regularly gathering data to pinpoint at-risk reefs. Using EOSDA LandViewer and Sentinel-2 imagery, we got a firsthand look at the phenomenon. By empowering scientists and policymakers, such satellite-derived data is driving positive change for our coastal and marine environments. Let's keep the momentum going!

New: Antarctica’s Elephant Island is a bleak emblem of how climate change can erode history. Its remote north shore is forever intertwined with the indomitable saga of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition of 1916. "Today, gazing upon those same shores, one can’t help but feel a poignant connection to the past — where the echoes of Shackleton’s expedition still linger but are now intertwined with the complex and ongoing story of our planet’s changing climate. The story of the Shackleton epic expedition’s struggle is no longer just a historical testament to human survival but also a living connection to a new fight for human survival — the rapidly evolving global climate challenge." 7moand to think when John and I suggested this 20 years ago everyone laughed at us ;+). Good to see its development but it could go much further.
