How-to: Backyard pet waste composting webinar with Enviro Pet Waste Network Can you treat dog and cat poop like any other “green” compost pile material? Rick Carr, farm director and master composter at Rodale institute, says, “I’d be more concerned about the risk of exposure to fecal coliforms by getting poop on my shoes and tracking it into my house than putting it in my compost. Fully cooked, cured, finished compost poses virtually no risk, no matter what went into it.” Find out what it takes to process pet waste with due diligence to produce finished compost that’s safe and beneficial for plants at EPWN's free webinar. August 22, 2024, 4 pm EDT, 3 pm CDT, 2 pm MDT, 1 pm PDT 10-15 min. webinar, Q&A will follow. Register today: https://lnkd.in/gMfyTK6v

An inspiring example of the positive impact of composting on mitigating the carbon footprint of an entire city! However, composting can be implemented successfully on a much smaller scale — particularly within individual businesses. By increasing composting at the business level, significant positive outcomes can be achieved. Composting reduces food waste directed to landfills, effectively decreasing the production of methane gas. 🥬 Lettuce compost our lettuce ♻️ #nationalcompostweek On today’s episode of Cartside 🛒 Convos, we are asking Jimbo’s shoppers how long they think a head of lettuce could take to break down in a landfill. It could take up to 25 years for a head of lettuce to break down in a landfill. It’s scary to think that there are heads of lettuce in the landfill older than some of our @jimbosnaturally shoppers 😱 Not only does sending our lovely lettuce leftovers to landfill cause us to miss out on their post life nutrients, but what would be a simple decomposition process via compost, instead could take 300x or more time to break down while maintaining their emission of methane UNTIL fully broken down. Alternatively, a head of lettuce that is composted either in backyard, commercially or municipally will break down much quicker (think weeks or months). ✅ So the best thing we can do to help mitigate them green house gasses and to utilize those good good nutrients is keep our food waste out of the landfills. Find new ways to gift it to our tummies or return it to our soil so that we may grow more 🥬 🚮 *Disclaimer* Waste practices can vary commercially and by incorporated and incorporated towns, townships, cities, counties & states. That’s what makes this whole waste industry thing so gosh darn silly. However waste collection and disposal tend to be improving all the time 💪 Please check with your local haulers for current accepted waste practices! We at Waste Wise & Allgoods Nonprofit, take pride in researching and verifying factual information to the best of our ability. If we have made an error, please reach out and provide your credible source. We will be happy to correct errors, if any. We are celebrating International Compost Awareness Week - ICAW USA. This annual event presents a fantastic opportunity to learn more about composting and its profound benefits for our environment. Here are actionable steps that businesses can take this week to integrate composting into their operations: 1. Streamline Food Waste Audits: Prioritize conducting a comprehensive food waste audit within your business. Identify areas of excess waste and inefficiency and develop targeted strategies to minimize waste generation. 2. Educate and Engage Staff: Educate and engage your staff about the importance of composting. Host training sessions, share informative resources, and encourage participation in composting initiatives throughout the week. 3. Embrace Composting Practices: Take proactive steps to divert organic waste from landfills by implementing composting practices within your establishment. Invest in composting infrastructure and explore opportunities to utilize resulting compost for on-site gardening or community initiatives. 4. Measure and Monitor Progress: Set measurable goals for food waste reduction and composting implementation, and regularly monitor your progress. Track metrics such as waste diversion rates and compost quality to assess the effectiveness of your efforts and identify areas for improvement. In honor of this week, we are offering to walk businesses through a complimentary food waste audit process. Email info@table2ground.com to set up this service. #icaw2024, #naturesclimatechampion #compost

Backyard Composting: Let’s Dig Into It Get involved with composting and help make Rockland County green. Learn more about composting from Rockland Green here: https://lnkd.in/eu6WSBES Why Compost? Food scraps and green waste are responsible for more than 30 percent of what we throw away. By composting these items instead, you can divert more than 500 lbs of organic matter from landfills per year. Once you feel the natural effects composting has on our environment, you’ll never go back! Composting reduces our landfill contribution and limits harmful methane fume emissions into the atmosphere. Organic waste from your compost pile will boost the biological and chemical structure to prevent soil erosion and give your plants an added growth spurt. Your now nutrient-rich soil creates a balanced ecosystem that exudes natural heat to slow pesky weed growth. A balanced ecosystem means fewer pests to limit the potential risk of diseases! Manage your organic waste with a reliable compost bin. Wire, mesh, and wooden bins are acceptable options, however, Rockland Green recommended compost bins are available through the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County. Pick one up today. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗴’𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽-𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀! With food waste drop-off stations soon opening across Winnipeg, it’s time to start collecting those food scraps! Store them in an airtight container, fridge, or freezer. With cooler weather, keeping them outside in a secure pail works too. When you pass by one of the new community drop-off bins, you’re ready to go! 𝟭𝟱 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽-𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟱 Starting October 15, Winnipeg will have 15 new food waste drop-off stations. Residents can bring food scraps and other compostable items in a container or compostable bag to any of these locations. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁? A simple way to determine if an item is compostable is to ask if it was alive or came from something living. If yes, it belongs in the bin! Think fruits, vegetables, and even items like meat, bones, and cheese. Thanks to a large-scale composting facility, more items can be processed than a typical backyard bin. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝘀: Items like plastic, compostable containers, and mixed-material packaging cannot be placed in the drop-off bins. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: This new program is set to make a big difference for Winnipeg’s environment. With organic waste making up about 44% of yearly household trash, this initiative helps reduce landfill use and extends their lifespan.
