🚨 Urgent Alert: Hennops River Crisis 🚨 Today, our beloved Hennops River is suffering a "FAR worse than usual" catastrophic contamination turning the water completely black and toxic. I am no stranger to the smell of the Hennops, but this is something else.. it's got me gagging, it's putrid.. This is not just an environmental disaster; it's a crime against nature and our community. The river, (which should be a source of life and beauty) is a poisonous, bubbling thick sludge. We cannot stand by and watch our waterways be destroyed. If our Rivers are this severely contaminated, we have long passed the point where Intervention is critical.. It's time to take action! Someone is responsible, the river was not like this yesterday. This is beyond irresponsible, and there needs to be honest accountability and immediate remediation ACTION.. Not a plan.. ACTION.. September is here, and that means it's Clean-Up and Recycle Month and International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) 2024. On 21 September, join global efforts to combat marine debris. SST is honoured to be the South African coordinator in collaboration with @Plastics SA. The 2023 ICC was a major achievement with 118 countries participating. Over 482,000 volunteers removed 3,178,837 kilograms of waste from 26,145 kilometres of coastline. In South Africa, 5,730 volunteers collected 60,208 kilograms of waste from 26.4 kilometers of coastline—a commendable effort. This highlights the serious need for improved data collection and greater participation. Challenges remain, including data recording, resource procurement, and external factors like pandemics and extreme weather. Tackling these requires a collaborative, sustained approach.
