In May 2024, Energy Vault, a company specialising in long-duration, grid-scale energy storage, announced an exclusive global partnership with SOM. Gravity energy storage systems (GESS) hold the potential to store and supply renewable energy to the power grid safely, for long periods, and without degrading. When integrated into tall buildings, these systems can maximise sustainability, accelerate carbon payback of building construction, and lower the levelised cost of energy consumption. They can also bring sustainable energy storage to natural landscapes with minimal environmental impact. Gravity energy storage technology can be incorporated into tall buildings in urban environments and deployable structures in natural environments. GESS operates using similar principles as hydroelectric plants, which are currently the largest source of grid storage. GESS installations use surplus energy to lift heavy blocks, which creates potential energy that can later be converted into electricity when lowered to the ground. Unlike hydroelectric plans, which can only be built on specific natural sites, GESS installations can theoretically be constructed anywhere—opening up wide new possibilities for clean energy storage and distribution. #renewableenergy #GESS #gravityenergystorage #highrise #environmentalmanagement

🔌Verra has opened a public consultation on a minor revision to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) TOOL07: Tool to calculate the emission factor for an electricity system, v7.0. The consultation is open through Monday, November 4, 2024. ➡️ The revised tool will be published in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The proposed updates aim to align the tool with the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) Assessment Framework of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). 💡 TOOL07 is used to calculate the grid emission factor for grid-connected renewable energy projects, among others. The suggested changes would improve the accuracy of these emission reduction calculations while ensuring conservativeness.
