My final edit of the retail headlines for 2023 - short but as ever, illuminating. Some big challenges heading in to 2024 for Selfridges, Lidl and JLP. Here's what I found interesting: Superdry in talks to sell Middle East and US brand rights Boxing Day footfall rises 4% but remains below pre-pandemic levels John Lewis & Partners to update turnaround plan as boss vows to prioritise retail 🤔 WHSmith's 'WHS' mini-rebrand sparks confusion ❓ Poundland & Dealz boss hails amazing response to ex-Wilko store openings [well done Austin Cooke] Lidl finance chief steps down following £76m loss Four Asda stores could strike in the New Year Retailers to foot the bill for consumer tech #recycling ♻️ Jigsaw sales and profits surge as it hits expansion trail UNIQLO UK boss vows to cut prices to attract more shoppers Selfridges seeks cash from co-owner after Signa files for insolvency 💰 My story of the week: The WHSmith's mini-rebrand has stimulated many LinkedIn posts. Maybe this is part of a #transformation plan or a better set-up for international expansion - it’s clearly a test - either way as a brand specialist I'd love to understand more about the journey that led to this brand execution. Merch, Apparel & Print Solutions That Protects Your Brand, Lowers Your Cost and Eliminates Your Procurement Pain
Have you ever considered creating a POP Up Store for a specific event? Here’s my most recent Pop Up Store case study. 😎 My customer: a 25 year highly respected ad agency. They partner with me for all their customers merch and apparel needs. The Application: The agency’s Fortune 100 client asks them if they can create a store for a T-shirt contest they’re having. Agency says YES and turns to ASB for the store creation, print and fulfillment. Contest: Customer has employees submit their T-shirt designs for a new company program roll out. T-shirts are voted on and the winning tee gets profiled in the store. Store: Store is built in 3 days. Employees begin ordering the winning tee, choosing their size and submitting their ship to address. Company picks up the tab. No credit card needed. Fulfillment: The store opens for two weeks and then closes after notification. All individual orders are scooped up and ordered in bulk, driving down costs and drop shipped direct to each employee. Agency invoices their customer for all tees ordered. Employees are thrilled. Customer is thrilled. Agency is thrilled. Bill and ASB are thrilled. Profits between ASB and agency are split. Another happy customer and another Pop Up Store success story! 💪 #popupstore #employeestore #corporateevents #eventplanner #salesmanager #hrdirector #marketingmanager #corporateapparel

What makes the experience Field Day so amazing? What they’re doing here is supporting the community. This is a place where people come and gravitate. They shop and drink. They share stories. Every little town was instrumental to so many people's lives. There was a focus on getting out of the little town to go to suburbia or the big city. This downtown is totally America. This space specifically for at least 150 years, was a men's shoe store. It was then the Heinz family general store. They sold, clothing and just general goods for your whole household for another 50 years. It was called Hanover Linens, they sold bedding. This was the hub. We've got a lot of little towns around us, people all come to Morris because it's where you go to get your stuff. The summer is off to an exciting start with the wave from White Claw! 🌊 Behind the scenes: Unveiling a new store in Monroe, New Jersey, involved a seamless takeover strategy before the holiday rush. Picture this: a striking 12ft tall and 6ft wide White Claw Seltzer Co sign positioned strategically at the end of the aisle, flanked by cold beer doors. The meticulous alignment of the three sections of coroplast was key to creating a captivating design. This successful endeavor was a true team effort, showcasing the synergy between the merchandiser, salesman, and art department. The result? An awe-inspiring display that leaves the owner saying, “Wow” every time he lays eyes on it. This project not only secured prime real estate within the store but also fostered a strong bond with the owners, solidifying a lasting partnership.🤝 #whiteclaw #seltzers #teamwork #takeover #signage #pos #salesandrelations #relationshipbuilding #newjersey #selfdriven #quickturnaround #accountrelations #gobigorgohome #summertime #4thofJuly #fourthofJuly #newaccount #brandawareness #marketingandadvertising #summer2024 #beach #merchandising #primeplacement

Freelance Strategy Director | ex-Ogilvy | Marketing Academy Scholarship | Google RARE Leadership Academy
Been thinking a lot about pricing strategy, discounting and value lately. For clients’ products but also for my own consulting services. We’ve all heard the ‘Never discount’ mantra before, and the reasons for it. But today I came across a different framing that I really like, because it is backed by brand purpose rather than (purely) commercial strategy. It comes from slow furniture brand Vitsœ, (who still have Dieter Rams on board as a designer to this day). Vitsœ’s Managing Director Mark Adams said: “We don’t discount. Because the person who didn’t ask for a discount is subsiding the person who did ask for a discount. That’s not truthful; that’s not honest; that’s not respectful. We stand against that.” [From an interview with Mark Adams in Adam Morgan & Malcolm Devoy's Overthrow II, which unpicks 10 strategies from the new wave of challenger brands] #challengerbrands #discounting #pricing #brandpurpose

In 1936, Troelstrup, a Copenhagen-based store still in operation today, faced an overstock of winter coats. To address this surplus, the innovative store owner, Niels Christian Pedersen Troelstrup, devised a remarkable sales strategy. He encased their entire store building, all five storeys, with scaffolding, draping it with over a thousand men's spring and winter coats. It created a striking display. This unconventional spectacle instantly drew the gaze of passersby, resulting in a surge of curious customers flocking to the store. The overwhelming response led to the involvement of local authorities to manage the crowds. Despite the police's intervention and subsequent directive to dismantle the display, the resourceful proprietor resolved their surplus inventory dilemma. The picture, which was taken by a passing American photographer, was published in newspapers all over Europe and in America. In 1940, the picture was also published in National Geographic. The story of Troelstrup's creative sales strategy offers several valuable insights: 1. Innovation Pays Off: Thinking outside the box and implementing unconventional ideas can lead to remarkable results. Capturing the attention of potential customers is crucial in marketing, and Troelstrup's eye-catching display demonstrates this effectively. Troelstrup's unique approach to displaying their surplus inventory not only attracted attention but also drove sales. 2. Adaptability is Essential: When faced with challenges such as excess inventory, businesses must adapt and find creative solutions. Troelstrup's ability to turn a surplus problem into a successful marketing opportunity showcases the importance of adaptability in overcoming obstacles. 3. Persistence Pays Off: Despite facing obstacles such as police intervention, Troelstrup's determination to sell their surplus inventory ultimately led to success. The story emphasises the importance of perseverance and resourcefulness in achieving goals. Overall, the story of Troelstrup's inventive sales strategy serves as a reminder of the value of innovation, attention-grabbing marketing tactics, adaptability, community engagement, and persistence in business success. #marketing #innovation #history #marketingcampaign #campaign #fashiondesigner #Copenhagen #clever #adaptability #persistence
