Day 12 of the VRGeoscience Limited Advent Calendar ๐โ๏ธis a top tip on enhancing Digital Outcrop Model interpretation by creating attributes within #VRGS. These attributes (e.g. dip, azimuth, coplanarity, colour, etc) are essential for improving information and simplifying interpretation and classification tasks. Learn how to utilise them effectively for both manual and automated interpretation techniques. #geology #geoscience #attributes

Need to update your grid around horizons and topsets in multiple wells? Leverage the Drag and Drop functionality and Influence Radius feature within the Group Tree in Mapping Mode. This enables a more precise and intuitive update to your subsurface structure based on extensive drilling data. Here's how you can streamline structural mapping with StarSteer: 1๏ธโฃ Inputs: Drag and Drop your horizons, tops or polygons from your object tree or group tree. 2๏ธโฃ Influence: Decide whether to ignore the inputs after a specific MD or define a vertical corridor and influence radius. 3๏ธโฃ Trend: Decide if you want a specific gridding algorithm and whether you want to trend along an existing grid. DEM maps of the northern Kansas area reveal a combination dendritic drainage pattern with a rectangular component. The strong lineation indicate that the surface mapped joint pattern is likely influenced influencing the patterns of the surface drainage patterns. The surface joint patterns are oriented in direction likely controlled by faulting as deep as Precambrian basement. Some rotation of the deeper faulting pattern may be occurring during different phases of tectonic reactivation in the midcontinent. The map below is DEM data rendered using the slope map option. This option seems able to more strongly delineate certain linear segments in the raw DEM data. This is a place where derivatives of the raw data can sometimes enhance the interpretation of the data. #geology #kansas #geologist #geophysics #topography

Geomechanical Approach for Fracture Prediction Some rocks fracture more easily than others owing to their differing strength & ductility. Note how the sandstones below (Carboniferous strata, St Andrews E Beach) are more fractured (red lines) than the shales & how the thick sandstone bed at the top appears to have less fractures than the thinner beds below. See blog for more details https://lnkd.in/eAku7uJs Please contact us at www.ogilviegeoscience.com for fracture characterisation, fault seal and structural interpretation/restoration work. #standrews #sandstones #shale #fractures #geology #geologyrocks #oilandgas #geothermal #geothermalenergy #northsea

Isostasy is a concept describing Earth's crustal balance, where a lighter continental crust floats higher than a denser oceanic crust. This equilibrium results from adjustments in crustal thickness, ensuring gravitational stability and influencing topography. #Seg #geophysical #SEGrets

It's #MappingMonday! Geologic maps use a combination of colors, lines, and symbols to depict the relative age, composition, and relationships among rocks and sediments at and near the earthโs surface. In this coloring activity, you will learn about the different geologic units in Utah. Click here to download and print the color-by-number activityโhttps://ow.ly/Ibu850PMReG #utahgeology

#didyouknow Australia is indeed moving north at about 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) per year. This movement is due to the tectonic activity of the Earth's plates. The Australian Plate is drifting northwards, which makes it the fastest-moving continental landmass. This shift is a fascinating aspect of plate tectonics and helps us understand the dynamic nature of our planet. https://lnkd.in/fzpnPPW #TectonicPlates #WorldsFastestContinent #EarthScience #PlateTectonics #GeologyFacts #TectonicActivity #EarthMovement #ContinentalDriftย #GPS #GeologicalStudy #EarthScienceFacts #Tectonics #EarthDynamics #TectonicShifts #GeologicalEvents #PlateMovements #TectonicActivity #GeographyFacts

A Simple Model for Plate Motion and Topography ๐ Recent discoveries have shown rapid elevation changes exceeding 100 meters per million years in numerous sedimentary basins! Last year, my colleagues and I have highlighted the role of relative tectonic plate motion and basal shear stress in these rapid changes (Bodur et al., 2023, Terra Nova). https://lnkd.in/efjvQmB8 Building on previous findings, my latest paper published in Geological Bulletin of Turkey introduces a torque-balance approach to quantify elevation changes due to basal shear stress (horizontal tectonic plate motion). It offers a more robust formula for estimating the impact of plate motion on Earth's topography. This mechanism can be considered as another type of dynamic topography, although it is driven by shear stress rather than normal stress at the base of tectonic plates. Check out the full details in the attached PDF. #Geology #Tectonics #EarthScience #Research #Stratigraphy #Geophysics
