The question of whether enlargement policy should be directly linked with defense policy has no easy answer - on the one hand, Eastern enlargement will have obvious implications for European security, on the other hand, the combination of the two policies may further complicate an already complicated process. With Monika Sus, we believe that the two policies should be closely coordinated with regard to Ukraine, and that a lack of coordination could block enlargement. We also suggest specific ways in which this coordination could be initiated. It should not be a difficult decision. However, the consequences of not helping our allies and not re-investing in our own defense will be deadly and possibly felt for generations to come. Let us hope decency, common sense, and wisdom prevails.
