Ever noticed how Aryna Sabalenka’s has been changing her strategy on the court lately? She’s shifted to “going for bigger targets,” while still smashing the ball in every single occasion—her shots flew at an average speed of 74mph at last year’s Wimbledon, surpassing the guys’ average of 71mph! This approach is the perfect metaphor for what we should be aiming to do in tennis club management these days. Let’s be real, many tennis directors and club managers get tempted to jump on every new trend. But the real win comes from picking those big, strategic goals that truly resonate with what our club stands for in the long run. Let’s think again about Sabalenka: it isn’t just just about playing it safe—it's about being smart where and when it counts. Whether we’re looking at boosting member engagement, upgrading our facilities, or rolling out cool new programs, the goal is to channel our efforts into making a real and measurable difference. By targeting these significant, strategic objectives with clarity and purpose, we’re not just upping our game—we’re also elevating the experience for every member and visitor. Let’s go for those big targets!

Anyone for tennis? You've probably picked this one up already in the national media, but here's our piece on the newly approved expansion of Wimbledon's All England Tennis Club. In short, after considerable back and forth, the GLA's deputy mayor has resolved to allow the club to build an 8,000 seater stadium and 38 additional tennis courts on listed parkland (and Metropolitan Open Land) opposite the current complex in south west London. It's been locally controversial, with plenty of ins and outs, and the club's arguments in favour of expansion has been subject to considerable scrutiny. The deputy mayor appears to have gone for the economic argument, while pointing out that the park had been largely off limits to casual visitors for most of the last century because it's been leased by a local golf club (whose members have each received a sizeable slice of the sale of the land). Pimms on the lawn for some, no doubt. Thoughts? https://lnkd.in/eNNipYTV NB: This is currently behind a paywall, as are all of our news articles initially. Wimbledon is one of my favorite annual sporting events, signaling the unofficial start of summer for me! Back in 2008, I arrived in London for a summer class on the day of the men's final. Not knowing anyone else in my class, I was a little nervous and apprehensive, but we all bonded over that classic 5 hour Federer/Nadal match and quickly became friends! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 🎾 Ever wondered about the magic behind Wimbledon's perfect grass? Neil Stubley, head of courts and horticulture at Wimbledon, reveals that the two-week tournament requires year-round preparation. By the late 1990s, Wimbledon transitioned all the courts to 100% perennial ryegrass for better performance, more durable courts, and a more predictable ball bounce. And once the championship starts, the work doesn't stop. Neil and his team will conduct nearly 20,000 measurements across 38 courts just during Wimbledon alone. Fun fact: The grass is kept at precisely 8 millimeters! ✂️🌱 It's a testament to how attention to detail and continuous improvement can create something truly extraordinary. What area in your life could benefit from this level of care? #Wimbledon2024 #BehindTheScenes #Planning #Future Source: https://lnkd.in/e9_u9Akc TinyURL: https://lnkd.in/e3yVCgXk

https://lnkd.in/eiuMgVyz In this world we do not often get recognised for the work we do outside our job. However it is an honour to have been awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year’ by the Surrey LTA. The Tennis club that I run has an important role in the community, bringing exercise, entertainment and well being to about 1000 members as well as the work we do with children, giving as many as we can the opportunity to try tennis, traditionally a elitist sport - a perception that I am working hard to break. I have learnt a huge amount since taking over; - delegation, how else with a large family and huge responsibilities at work could I be successful ? - the power of setting a clear vision, that the board can get behind and use as a decision making framework - compromise, this job is a clearest example of “you can’t please all the people all of the time” Teamwork is the key, as it is in most roles, I could not have been successful without all the individuals that give up their time and work at the club.

Community facilities are not just spaces - they are the vibrant heartbeats of our neighborhoods, nurturing much more than just physical health and fitness. These spaces are where children learn invaluable life lessons - resilience, teamwork, the importance of hard work, and the realities of both winning and losing. This, in turn has immense benefits for future generations of our communities. Being a part of a sporting community goes far beyond the physical activities. It lays the foundation for a lifetime of benefits, from improved health and fitness to building extensive networks and fostering strong mental health. I would be very interested to see a long term cost analysis of providing and maintaining community sporting facilities against the long term savings on our medical system and criminal justice system. I understand that Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in WA and is also an inclusive sport. In this way, I recognize the significance of community facilities in contributing to shaping well-rounded individuals and fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness in our communities. Investing in these spaces means investing in the future of our society.

The Redbacks are a proud organisation that takes a family and community-focused approach to the development of people and the sport. For the Redbacks to have created and fostered Olympic-level talent and to have such a strong bond in their teams, clubs, and community is remarkable. They have achieved this without a home base and, as an organisation, are stretched across 28 facilities, which is a testament to their commitment to the sport and community.” “Basketball WA sees that the Perth Redbacks are part of our High Priority Facility Cohort, and the Redbacks are BWA’s highest facility priority. You don’t have to be a supporter of the Redbacks to support their need for an indoor multi-sport facility; you just have to be a supporter of athletes, kids, families, and participants of all ages and abilities having access to more sporting facilities.” – Nathan Cave (CEO Basketball WA) Join their campaign and sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/g8SzFd59

State of Rugby in Glasgow's East End: A Muddy Pitch and an Uphill Battle As a volunteer on the committee of our local club in Glasgow's East End, I witness firsthand the passion for the sport, despite being a clear minority in a city obsessed with football. We are the only rugby club in the east of Glasgow, within the city boundary, fostering a true grassroots movement. We build camaraderie and resilience on the pitch, but our biggest challenge isn't tackles or scrums – it's the state of the pitches themselves. Imagine this: you turn up for training, eager to hone your skills, and are greeted by a scene resembling a river. Mud reigns supreme, with puddles the size of small ponds threatening to swallow your boots whole. These aren't just damp patches – we're talking about pitches that resemble a tributary of the nearby Tollcross Burn after a heavy downpour. This is the reality for our club, the only two public rugby pitches available in the East End. And the kicker? They're council-owned, with access granted on a permission basis only. Here's the even more frustrating part. Millions have been recently poured into flood management in nearby areas through the City Region Deal. Yet, our pitches – the very foundation for nurturing future rugby talent – seem to have been completely overlooked and in fact become worse. The same thing has happened at the local Bowling Club too. Glasgow City Council, Scottish Water, SEPA – where's the support for grassroots sports like rugby? Open spaces are meant for recreation, not replicating the murky depths of a river! Basic geography tells you these shouldn't be overflowing with this much water. We're passionate, but we can't fight the tide (literally) on our own. Better player facilities are crucial for our dedicated coaches, volunteers, and most importantly, the future of rugby in Glasgow's East End. **#glasgowrugby #minoritysport #grassrootsstruggles #weneedbetterpitches**
