Adding to its growing portfolio of mass timber buildings, Hines opened T3 ATX Eastside in Austin. Sharing some of the triumphs and challenges of this unique project, Cherise Lakeside, FCSI, interviewed Bobby Larson, Senior Associate, DLR Group. The design team decided to expose some the exterior timber. Consequently, the natural greying of the wood over time will help the new building better blend into its surrounding environment. In embracing the local context, Laron’s team selected materials and textures to compliment the exposed timber including leather, blackened steel and brick. “Their natural texture, colors and patterns with slight variation fit with the timber structure,” explains Larson. Another issue with mass timber is negotiating the permitting process for the structural requirements, fire protection, acoustics, etc., particularly when jurisdictions are not so familiar with this building type. “We try and meet with the city early in the project and go over the code justifications to make sure we both understand the code the same way. The Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower) in Chicago, USA, is an engineering marvel due to its innovative bundled tube structural system, which consists of nine interconnected vertical tubes that provide both strength and flexibility. Instead of relying on a traditional steel frame or single core, this system allowed the building to resist lateral forces, such as wind, more efficiently as it distributes the wind loads across the entire structure, rather than focusing them on the center, making it more stable and allowing it to reach a height of 1,450 feet (442 meters). This design also reduced the amount of steel required, making it a more economical and practical solution for constructing supertall skyscrapers. The Berlin Wall used PRECAST concrete panels for its construction. These panels allowed for quick and durable assembly of the barrier, which became a powerful symbol of the Cold War's divide between East and West Berlin. By late 1961 and into 1962, the Berlin Wall's initial temporary barriers were replaced with permanent precast concrete structures, crucial for its long-term durability. The Wall was constructed using large, precast concrete panels that were manufactured off-site and assembled on location, allowing for rapid and consistent construction along its 96-mile length. The panels, typically 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide, were reinforced and sometimes included additional security features like watchtowers and guard rails. The design also included a heavily patrolled "death strip" between the inner and outer barriers. Recently, architects tried to respond to constantly changing human needs by using many design techniques and technologies. The most outstanding technique is kinetic architecture, which was presented by William Zuk and Roger H. Clark in the early seventies in their book "kinetic architecture" .They imagined transformable buildings able to change their physical geometries, such as stadiums with movable seatings and retractable roofs, and flexible buildings with air-filled or revolving structures.
