This is your annual awards season reminder that saying 'I am humbled' means you've had your standing reduced. It is not a good thing. You are humbled on the sporting field when you get your arse kicked. If you think you are feeling 'humbled' by something awesome - e.g winning an award, being a speaker on a panel - the words you're searching for are more likely: "I am honoured and astonished." or "I feel unworthy." If you're tempted to say/write 'I am humbled', ask yourself - have you been handed the Wooden Spoon equivalent? No? Then you have not been 'humbled'. It's different from the adjective version of the word - humble. Someone is described as humble because they're not arrogant/show-offs/materialistic etc. This has been a public service announcement (or grammar pedant post if you prefer).

Year 2 of spearheading the American Advertising Awards for AAF Black Hills and I am SO excited to see what our local creatives enter into our competition this year! 🙌 Have you been thinking about submitting your work? Let me clear a few things up: 1. You don't have to be from the Black Hills to participate! The rules allow entries to be submitted to the nearest Ad Awards, which means that entries from neighboring regions like Wyoming are welcome to join us. So, don't hesitate to participate! 2. Our judging process isn't about categories; it's all about the quality. Each submission is evaluated based on specific criteria and scored from 40 to 100. The highest scores earn those coveted gold and silver ADDYs. 3. You don't need to be part of an agency to enter. If you're a freelancer or part of an internal marketing team and you've crafted something you're proud of, we want to see it! So we finally have some regulation of the cask world! And it is from a REAL LIFE authority with teeth - the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). In short the ASA has issued an enforcement notice to whisky cask investment companies, demanding greater transparency in their advertising. This directive, effective from January 2, 2024, aims to ensure that consumers are not misled and are fully informed about the risks and details of such investments. The notice requires that advertisements must clearly disclose the risks involved in investing, including the potential for fluctuating values and the fact that returns are not guaranteed. It also mandates that ads must contain “material information” necessary for consumers to make informed decisions. This includes the unregulated status of whisky cask investments, the variability of investment values, and applicable fees and conditions. Where I think this gets very interesting is how this intersects with companies telling customers the actual nature of their ownership (i.e. securities rather than casks) as it could very easily be brought into this guidance.
