Creating a legacy is not easy, but there are success stories you can study.
One source of such stories is aptly named “Legacy.” Written by James Kerr, this book shares key learnings (like this quote) from the winningest professional sports club in the world: the All Blacks rugby team in New Zealand.
If you’re building your 2024 #TBRlist (To Be Read List), we cannot recommend Legacy enough.

"Relationships are more important than wins"
🔥
Another way of saying: the bonds between us in shared endeavour are the stuff of our memories.
The core insight of my work as a philosopher and workplace culture designer is that as a leader, you can only truly be intentional about the journeys of self discovery that you create space for in your workplace, and the meaningful connections among your people that you create the conditions for. That is to say: 'how much time, space, energy, and resource will you pour into the bonds between us?'
This is a truth that runs through across the high performance world of sport and into the workplace cultures most people spend time in.
As always, Professor Adam Nicholls provides insight below with evidence of why we should all be aware of it.
Professor of Sport Psychology at the University of Hull.

Spurs Sports & Entertainment head coach, Greg Popovich, has won 5 National Basketball Association (NBA) championships. He has coached at the Spurs since 1996.
It's an important reminder for coaches and leaders to focus on developing their relationships with others as:

As a coach or a leader, are you building relationships that will last forever?
In the heat of competition, it’s easy to forget the core values that make business truly special. This video from the Olympics is a powerful reminder. 🏅
Injured handballer Albertina Kassoma is carried off the field by her opponent, Tamires Araujo Frossard.
"There was no way I wouldn't help her."
Moments like these show us that while the drive to win is important, the spirit of sportsmanship transcends the final score.
Do you follow Frossard's example?
How do you incorporate the spirit of sportsmanship in your professional and personal life?

Since the sports industry is so competitive, “the only way to separate yourself from the competition is to have that experience – and MSU provides so many opportunities for that.” - Nathan Blum (Class of 2012)
Nathan is featured in the 2024 edition of The Magazine. Read his complete feature here: https://lnkd.in/erQh4RdG
When was the last time you won something?
It may be a long long time, unless you're into sports.
I am sure you keep getting recognised for good work within your organisation.
But, winning is different!
Remember the last time you won a contest in college or the medals you won in school (this is me in the pic in Class 4!)
There's nothing that gets close to that feeling.
How do you experience it once again?
The simplest way is to compete with yourself:
- it may be the time of your 5 km walk
- it may be the bench press weight
- it may be recording a long video in a single take
What's going to be your way to win against you?
