🎉 On the 11th of February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. It serves as an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. This Day offers a chance to encourage women and girls to participate fully and equally in science. UNESCO views gender equality as a global issue and believes that empowering young girls, educating them, and giving them the opportunity they need to voice their opinions will contribute to the development of the world and peace. 👩🏻🔬There are several theories explaining why fewer women choose professions in the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Some claim that girls tend to be more self-critical and undervalue their talents, leading them to believe they are unfit to pursue #STEM fields in higher education. 🌐 This year’s celebration focuses on ‘Closing the Gender Gap in Science: Accelerating Action’, with the 9th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly taking place in the United Nations Headquarters, New York from 8-9 February under the theme ‘Women and Girls in Science Leadership, a New Era for Sustainability’. Let us remember the immense contributions of Marie Curie, Janaki Ammal, Katherine Johnson, Rosalind Franklin, Gladys West, Flossie Wong-Staal, Asha de Vos and countless girls and women to science and encourage them to walk forward. 🔬 Read about 10 remarkable women scientists left an indelible mark on the world. Their groundbreaking achievements not only advanced scientific knowledge but paved the way for aspiring scientists to follow in their footsteps >> https://lnkd.in/g-2J9AX4 #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience #Womenleadership

ATHENA celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), ATHENA is reflecting on the progress made and the challenges that still lie ahead in achieving gender equality in science. On this occasion, the United Nations highlighted the broader importance of women's participation in STEM fields for tackling global challenges outlined in the Agenda for Sustainable Development. From improving health to combating climate change, diverse perspectives are essential. Women and girls bring unique insights, talent, and creativity to the table, enriching the research landscape and driving innovation. Despite the recognition of STEM's significance for national economies, gender equality in these fields remains elusive across most countries. This gap underscores the urgency of concerted efforts to remove barriers and create inclusive environments where women can thrive in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Initiatives like the last ATHENA talk by Mar Fernandez Cendon on 'The illusion of university equality: an approach to the gender gaps in academia' underscores the need for critical discussions and actions to promote equality and diversity. In the talk, various gender gaps in academia and broader were presented, followed by a discussion on how to tackle them. Several concrete actions that universities (and other organisations) can take were presented. As we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let's reaffirm our commitment to fostering gender equality in academia and beyond. It's not only a matter of fairness but also essential for unleashing the full potential of talent and addressing the complex challenges facing our world. #womenandgirlsinscience

Prof. Joanna Niedziółka-Jönsson, Chair of our Scientific Council, shares further thoughts on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐏𝐂 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? "Whether a woman will succeed in science depends largely on her individual interests, determination, and passion. While there are many female chemistry students and doctoral candidates, the number of women attaining habilitation after obtaining a doctorate remains low. The imbalance towards a predominantly male environment at this level is partly due to women leaving the field, often to take on caring responsibilities as mothers, which is a natural part of life, but we need to support women to be able to prosper in both these domains. It should not be a choice between being a mother or a successful scientist. Therefore, it is important to note and appreciate that support systems are evolving - universities are establishing daycare centers and kindergartens, while the Institute is adapting to accommodate working mothers with flexible work schedules and other amenities. This creates valuable opportunities for women, especially at this pivotal stage, while individual contexts and societal frameworks continue to influence our experiences." We extend our gratitude to Prof. Niedziółka-Jönsson for sharing her insights. On this significant date, let us reiterate our dedication to advancing gender equality and empowering women in the field of science.
