NPs say it's harder than ever to find two collaborating physicians. Often hundreds of miles away, the physicians are not needed, rarely consulted, and cost money. PCNP President Amanda Laskoskie speaks to KDKA News on Pennsylvania's requirements for NPs to obtain written agreements with two collaborating physicians, and how these requirements act as obstacles to caring for patients. Amanda explains that one NP she recently spoke with "may speak to her collaborating physician once or twice a year, but every month, every nurse practitioner in her practice – I believe she has four – they pay 2 to 3 percent of revenue for that month to that collaborating physician for that agreement." #NursePractitioners #FullPracticeAuthority #Pennsylvania #HealthcareAccess #HealthcareWorkers #SB25 #HB1825 #CareForPA

Healthcare workers have a tough enough job as it is giving one-on-one care to sick patients, the last thing they should have to worry about is their personal safety when on the floor. Yet, a majority of nurses can recall countless times that patients and their families made them feel unsafe and at risk. So, what kind of tools can help #healthcare providers feel safe in the workplace? Registered Nurse Alexis Johnson has some suggestions, including a way that #mobiledevices can be used to facilitate rapid emergency communication, streamline incident reporting, and help first responders locate staff even if they can’t talk or text. https://lnkd.in/e-DZpfJj #ZebraEmployee

PBS recently highlighted the numerous issues patients and nurse practitioners face in restrictive practice states, from lack of patient access to the high price many NPs must pay physicians for collaborating agreements. The risk of suddenly losing a collaborating physician due to an unexpected illness, move, or retirement, means patients would suddenly be left without their longtime primary care NP. When patients were asked how they would feel about losing their NP due to red tape of collaborating agreements, they worried about losing that listening ear of their longtime care provider, and that choice for their own health care. In some rural and underserved communities, losing a local NP may mean patients lose access to any local option for primary care. #nursepractitioners #patientaccess #fullpracticeauthority #accesstocare #healthcareaccess

"I can’t emphasize enough how important nurse practitioners are to the Community Health Centers, but more importantly – it’s about patients first. Patients are the most important part of this equation. Patients are the ones who can’t access health care. It’s not just primary care, it’s behavioral health services. Nurse practitioners are filling that gap day in and day out across the state. We have 375 locations across Pennsylvania. We cannot find enough physicians to care for those folks. 80% of the million people we care for every day are on Medicaid or uninsured. Nurse practitioners are the backbone of what we do day in and day out. We employ more than 300 nurse practitioners across Pennsylvania. They care for 750,000 patients every year. That’s why Senate Bill 25 and House Bill 1825 are so incredibly important to the future of health care." – Eric Kiehl, PA Association of Community Health #NursePractitioners #CareForPA #FullPracticeAuthority #HB1825 #SB25 #AccessToCare #PatientsFirst #CommunityHealthAccess

Physician Consultant for Medical Malpractice Attorneys | Pre-Litigation Case Review | Expert Search and Referral | All Specialties | No Retainer
The recent CMS proposed rule for nursing home staffing has created a lot of discussion in the healthcare industry. From the MedLegal perspective, increased staffing ratios seem like a very reasonable solution given the large volume of nursing home neglect and abuse cases. However, the recent data showing 80% of nursing homes would need to increase staffing to stay in compliance creates a huge problem. It takes a very special kind of person to work in a nursing home... low wages... often depressing situations... tough hours.... Nursing homes can't find enough people to staff their facilities right now... If the CMS rule goes into effect, it will create and even bigger supply/demand mismatch... I am not a health policy expert and certainly don't have a solution to the problem. However, I do know that attorneys working in this space need to watch how all this debate plays out, as it could have significant impact on their practice and case strategy. Does anyone here have more insight into the proposed CMS rule? Any health policy experts out there?
