The American Heart Association predicts heart failure will affect more than 8 million Americans by 2030. During American Heart Month, we are highlighting ways Humana has identified opportunities to improve health outcomes and reduce costs for those living with cardiovascular disease. According to a recent Humana Healthcare Research study published in the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy, heart failure patients who delayed filling new prescriptions by more than 30 days after hospital discharge had a 65% increased risk of rehospitalization within 6 months. Delayed filling was also associated with 49.5% increase in average all-cause medical costs. These findings can support further development of post discharge clinical program to improve timely medication adherence after a heart failure event. February: American Heart Month While it is important for both men and women to pay attention to the health of their hearts, this year the Division for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention (DHDSP), is wanting to focus on encouraging women to pay extra careful attention to their hearts and advocate for their health. According to the DHDSP, a large percentage of women are not aware of the fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and majority do not know or recognize the signs of heart trouble when it occurs. Did you know that symptoms many times can be quite different in women when they are experiencing heart trouble compared to men? According to mayoclinic.org, "women tend to have some chest discomfort whereas men tend to have chest pain. Women also are more likely to experience neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, upper belly discomfort, pain in one or both arms, nausea, vomiting, sweating, lightheadedness or dizziness, unusual fatigue, and heartburn or indigestion". It's no wonder women tend to ignore their symptoms, many of these symptoms go along with so many other issues like thyroid, flu, or just stress in general. All the more reasons why we as women need to know our bodies and know the symptoms of heart trouble so if they do happen, we can know that it's not normal for us. Early detection usually is quite treatable. Don't WAIT, get checked! I have attached the link to the DHDSP site and to the Mayo Clinic. Both are excellent and will give you empowerment to know what to look for should you ever run into trouble with your heart. Please, if you don't feel right, advocate for yourself, you are worth it! https://lnkd.in/gzSusF6Y

In this life-saving webinar, we will explore how each Allied Health professional and caregiver can take an active role in optimizing respiratory health for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients and clients. This webinar will help your organization to have the confidence to accept the next ALS patient referral. This program is fully intended for professionals who work with ALS patients infrequently. It will provide an overview of how respiratory health is impacted by ALS and ways the entire healthcare team can intervene to improve patients’ quality of life through better respiratory function. ALS is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is a cruel disease that gradually paralyzes all voluntary muscles, robbing patients the ability to speak, eat, move, and eventually breathe. There is no cure for ALS yet with death resulting mainly from respiratory failure three to five years after symptom onset. As the exact underlying causative pathological pathway is unclear and potentially diverse, finding a suitable therapy to slow down or possibly stop disease progression remains challenging. The ALS Association is urgently working towards making ALS a livable disease for everyone, everywhere, until we can cure it. You and your clinicians and caregivers can truly help make a difference and enhance quality of life for your patients and clients if you understand what to look for and interventions that you can implement on their behalf. https://lnkd.in/eF5tQtnd #HomeCare #Medicare #HCAFLA #Florida #Webinar #HomeHealth #healthcare #als #education #ceus #continuingeducation

Why isn't palliative care a primary consideration in heart failure management? Too often, the conversation around heart failure management focuses solely on medication and surgical interventions, sidelining an essential component of comprehensive care: palliative care. For those of us deeply involved in the treatment and study of heart failure and cardiomyopathies, it's clear that this oversight is not just a gap but a gaping hole in our approach to patient-centered care. Palliative care goes beyond managing symptoms; it's about improving the quality of life for patients and their families. It involves thorough communication, understanding patient values, and integrating these principles into the care plan from diagnosis to advanced stages. Yet, despite its proven benefits, including better symptom management and even potentially longer life expectancy, palliative care remains underutilized in heart failure patients. It's time to bridge this gap. As professionals dedicated to advancing heart failure treatment, we must advocate for the integration of palliative care into standard practice. Not only will it enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes, but it will also support families through one of the most challenging periods of their lives. Let's make palliative care an inherent part of heart failure management - our patients deserve no less. #HeartFailureCare #PalliativeCare #PatientCenteredMedicine #MedicalEducation

Navigating the challenges of sepsis diagnosis in emergency departments Sepsis is an incredibly challenging diagnosis, particularly in the emergency department where most septic patients first enter the hospital. These patients often present with a wide variety of symptoms, unlike more immediately identifiable conditions such as STEMI, which shows ST elevation on an EKG, or stroke, which has clear physical exam findings. Currently, most hospitals lack effective tools to accurately identify septic patients. We rely on the SIRS criteria for sepsis screening, despite its lack of validation and limited reliability. This often leads to both underdiagnosis and overdiagnosis, resulting in missed cases of sepsis as well as the unnecessary utilization of hospital resources. The complexity and variability in sepsis presentations make it difficult to ensure timely and accurate diagnoses, highlighting a significant gap in our emergency medical practices.
