Meet the Team Monday! We are starting with our fearless leader James Pippin! How long have you been in the CPG world? My first job in the CPG world was in sales and marketing at New Belgium Brewery in 2002! I had never had a beer before (at 23!), and when I got into the second round interview, I decided to get a pizza and a six pack of fat tire to figure out what I was getting myself into. Since then, I've worked in multiple startups, one that hit $54M in revenue before it was sold (I was personally responsible for $18M), as well as vending, grocery checkout systems and technology, wine, and more. What's your area of expertise and territories you manage? Whole Foods is my main account, but I also work on regional accounts with Beth in Washington and Oregon. What's a brand you wish you repped and why? I already get to represent a bunch of my favorites, but I do love a great paella or risotto so the ANETO NATURAL line of broths and the Matiz canned seafood come to mind. In beverage, I'm a pretty avid Humm Kombucha drinker, and no evening is complete without a little cheese tray at our home and Rogue River Blue Cheese often is a feature! Piece of advice you would give brands? Plan to succeed incrementally and find the enjoyment and passion in your work. Build your connections with consumers and retailers one at a time, and put your full heart into each. They will feel it, the market will feel it, and pretty soon people will be coming to you. Favorite Grocery Store to shop? Hard to pick a favorite, but I love Top of the Hill in Renton, a local produce forward grocer that runs great promotions, has terrific produce and meat, and a smaller footprint. PCC, Lazy Acres Natural Market, the West Hollywood Pavilions, Bellingham Coop, and Huckleberry's in Spokane all make the list too! When you're not working what do you enjoy doing? I can't tell you how pleased I was to see this post, after 6 months in the making, working with Sam, Oli and the fabulous team at Attic Brew Co. Having reflected on this over the last few days, for me, put simply all this hard work comes down to a few key things: Empowering and engaging your team, creating an amazing culture and encourages everyone to go that extra mile (deeply commercial!) Also advising on the appropriate team structure for the future to enable growth. Giving Business Owners & Founders the opportunity and time to focus 'on' the business (always hard when the day job is seemingly relentless!) Supporting them to do this is critical and varies individually but I love being able to 'dip in' to different areas with teams where they need more support, people, commercial, operational in particular. Bringing structure and clarity to how the business operates, and making it more efficient (boring I know, but I cant emphasise how important this is to grow sustainably!) The business was wildly successful for decades, until it wasn’t. Red Lobster are now preparing to file for bankruptcy Business Insider reports. What went wrong? 1. Changing customer preferences which the group were too slow to respond to 2. New alternatives entering into the space of Red Lobster and taking their previously loyal customers 3. Industry shifts that left Red Lobster without a profitable business model 4. Sale of the firm which lead Red Lobster to have a difficult to manage ownership structure 5. Raymond Albert Kroc (1902-1984). The man who signed up to selling paper cups and milk shake mixers after World War II. That’s until he spotted a diamond in the rough while doing his thing. Well, one day, he bumped into a modest hamburger restaurant owned and run by two brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald in San Bernadino, California. The man was impressed. Being the visionary that he was, Kroc talked the two brothers into franchising their business, and thereon implemented a myriad of innovative business strategies that propelled its growth to levels never imagined by the founders. Still seeing its potential, Kroc went on to purchase McDonald’s from Maurice and Richard McDonald. The rest is history. Today, McDonald's is the world’s largest fast food restaurant chain, present in 100+ countries. Right after Walmart, it’s the world’s second largest private employer and in 2022, the world’s sixth highest in terms of brand value. Ray Kroc, the maverick of fast food, is also known for many legendary quotes. For me, the one that takes the prize (and live by) is this one… “When you’re green, you’re growing.
