Optional Shipping Protection 📦 - Should You? Some merchants provide the option to purchase optional shipping protection in the checkout. Typically it's priced at 3-4% of the order subtotal, so in this example is $1.88 on a $50 cart. I'm on the fence (let's get a discussion going in the comments). There are definitely pros for both the consumer and the merchant, but there are also some important considerations (and potential downsides) that merchants must consider. Let's dig in: Consumer 🛍 (Pros ➕ ) : ➡ Their order is protected against all damage, loss and theft (inc porch piracy) so they don't need to worry about this when ordering ➡ If they need to make a claim, it's a relatively pain free process - dealing directly with the insurance provider vs having to deal with the retailers customer support team and/or the carrier ➡ Claim resolution is quicker and in most cases the insurance provider will re-order a replacement product for the consumer ➡ The costs are relatively low (a couple of bucks) Merchant 🏬 (Pros ➕, When The Consumers Opt's-In) : ➡ Carrier insurance is limited to $100, so if the claim is > $100 the retailer isn't on the hook to cover the difference. ➡ Carrier insurance does not generally cover porch piracy (i.e. if there is photo proof that the package was successfully delivered then if it's subsequently stolen, the carrier won't pay). Porch piracy is covered by optional consumer package insurance. ➡ The retailer gets rev-share from the insurance provider for every customer that opts-in, so this is a profit center that helps subsidize free shipping ➡ The retailer doesn't need to manage the claim (the consumer works directly with the optional insurance provider) significantly reducing the burden on the customer support team But....Consumers don't really understand why they need to pay extra for insurance, they assume that if something goes wrong the retailer will refund or ship a replacement item. So before jumping in, merchants should carefully consider if this is right for their brand and if it might hurt conversation rates. Some questions to ask are: ➡ Does offering optional insurance actually increase consumer confusion and anxiety, especially if they decide not to buy the optional insurance? ➡ Should the insurance be opt-in or opt-out? Will consumers be offended and abandon cart if it's opt-out? Will adoption be low if it's opt-in? ➡ Does the cost create higher cart abandonment? Consumers expect shipping to be free, so why would they be prepared to pay for shipping insurance? ➡ Does this cheapen the brand / CX? ➡ Is handing off customer support (insurance claims) to a 3rd party a good or a bad thing? Offering optional shipping insurance may be right for some merchants and not for others. There vendors in the space, namely Route and Corso (who also offer optional CO2 offsets, but that's a post for another day) are certainly seeing increased adoption of their solutions. What do you think? #shippinginsurance

Providing unrivalled compliance support to insurance intermediaries Chartered MCSI, MICA, MD at dart Compliance Ltd
Got asked about this Friday. There’s a whole bunch of rumours about Consumer Duty, including this and that the FCA are set to ban payment of motor premiums up-front! I know…??? If you want the truth and sensible ways your business can meet the real requirements, give us a call.
People who don't understand Consumer Duty have been saying the FCA is set to ban GAP insurance; the FCA responded this week by saying, "No, you can sell GAP insurance; you just can't rip people off who buy it!" In other words it has to be fair value! You will see this over and over again in the future. https://lnkd.in/eJR_W-Pr Here's a summary : The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has clarified that it has no plans to ban GAP Insurance despite concerns about sales practices and the product's value to consumers. The FCA has highlighted that a significant portion of GAP Insurance revenue benefits insurers and dealers/brokers, with a relatively small payout ratio to claimants. The industry has been urged to rapidly improve the value delivered to customers, with the FCA emphasising its readiness to intervene if firms fail to demonstrate that consumers are receiving fair deals.
