Aviation's climate impact goes beyond CO2 emissions, causing non-CO2 effects, such as #contrails and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Despite extensive studies, significant uncertainties in scientific understanding of their climate consequences still exist. 💭 What is a #contrail? Aviation’s #ClimateImpact is not just limited to CO2: aviation’s non-CO2 climate warming impacts include emissions such as nitrogen oxides, stratospheric water vapour and particulate matter, and the formation of persistent contrails. ✏ Our report calls on aviation leaders to establish ‘Airspace-wide Living Labs’ by the end of 2025 to address uncertainties in contrail avoidance, which could reduce the #climate impact of #aviation by up to 40%. Climate change is affecting our planet and daily lives in all sorts of ways, so many that we hear about new ones everyday. Peter Neenan's article for the Evening Standard on how climate change is increasing airplane turbulence (with devastating consequences) is not only insightful, it also goes on to explain the potential solutions. 🌎 The aviation industry accounts for around 2 to 3% of global CO2 emissions, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This takes into account the CO2 effects produced from the fuel burnt, but not the non-CO2 effects, which can double this contribution to global emissions.
