Please have a read of Nicky's career story. • Can you give a paragraph on your career journey to get to where you are now? I left school at 16, not having a clue of what I wanted to do, except not be at school. I did a typing/bookkeeping course whilst sitting my Highers in evening classes.  I started training to be a primary school teacher but, whilst I loved working with kids/learning about developmental stages, I didn’t have much confidence and I dropped out.  I got a job in civil service – working with a bunch of scientists who mostly sat on cliffs and counted seabirds or went out in boats to count seabirds and cetaceans (where I also learned that dolphins, porpoises and whales are cetaceans). After a few years I wanted to prove to myself that I could apply myself and get a degree, and I graduated with MA in English Lit & Film Theory from Aberdeen Uni when I was 30 years old. From there, I worked in Projects in oil & gas for around 10 years, qualifying as a PRINCE2 Practitioner and was all set to continue my career in project work, since I felt sure this was my calling. Unfortunately, there was a downturn in the oil industry, so I set up my own digital marketing business which I ran for a few years – writing SEO copy and training business owners in Social Media Marketing. More recently I worked as an Office Manager in Construction and then an Office Manager for a Charity before I joined BAC in 2019 as Admin Team Leader. I’m really excited to be starting my new role of Project Manager at Bon Accord Care – which is actually my dream job - on the 25th Nov. • If a young person wanted to do a role like yours what steps could they take to get there? For anyone interested in the Admin Team Lead role you need to be an all-rounder - learn as much as you can about the work that the various teams/staff do at Head Office, even volunteer to join working groups or meetings to build your knowledge and get to know your colleagues because you do need to know who does what. Try and gain experience in supervision - even if you don’t currently line manage someone you could gain experience through mentoring an MA Admin working in your service. Good MS Office/Digital skills are a must and an ability to stay organised and be curious – ask yourself why something is done a certain way and think about if/how it could be improved and offer solutions.   • Please share your top tip for success My top tip is to be aware of tasks/areas of work that you enjoy doing and/or have a natural aptitude for. These are your unique strengths and once you know what they are you can more easily look for opportunities that include more of your strengths in your working day. #ScotCareersWeek24 #ShapeTheFuture 💼💜✨

Having career pathways in place makes it possible for employees to set clear goals for their growth and movement within your company. Supervisors should have regular discussions about the pathways that are available. What positions are a possibility? What training is needed? What skills need to be demonstrated?
