A new exhibit is hopping up at the Aquarium! 🐸 FROGS: Facing a Changing World 🐸 Leap into the colorful, strange, and rapidly changing world of frogs at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Starting May 24, 2024, discover vibrant habitats featuring colorful tropical frogs from around the world; peek behind-the-scenes to watch staff care for frogs from eggs to adults; see a new exhibit space highlighting California and Baja frogs, their amphibian relatives, and reptile neighbors; and even paint your own virtual frog. Learn about the diversity of species and their unique adaptions, the threats they are facing, and how the Aquarium is helping to save them from extinction.

Petals Patrol: Unveiling the Blooming Secrets of Gladiolenwiese! Nestled near Villach, Austria, the renowned 'Gladiolenwiese' is a cherished haven for nature enthusiasts. As late spring transitions into early summer, this picturesque spot transforms into a vibrant sea of Gladiolas (Gladiola palustris). Despite their distinctive allure, few have ventured to count these blossoms. Our pilot action tackles this challenge, seeking to answer the captivating question: how many individual Gladiola plants grace this landscape? This endeavor is pivotal for monitoring population health and phenological trends. Armed with a YOLO8 deep learning model, trained on aerial images of Gladiola, we cracked the flower count mystery. The result? A staggering 3,316 flowers confidently identified across the entire expanse of Gladiolenwiese.

The Lyrebird is by far one of our country's most interesting animals. Here are some of our favorite facts about them. 1. They are most notable for their impressive ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment, from barking dogs to car alarms to mobile phones. Sounds whacky but it's real! If you haven't seen it we strongly recommend some YouTubing. 2. They sing throughout the year, but the peak of the breeding season, from June to August, is when they sing with the most intensity. During this peak males may sing for hours of the day, almost half the hours of daylight. The song of the lyrebird is a mixture of elements of its own song and mimicry of other species. 3. Male lyrebirds call mostly during winter, when they construct and maintain an open arena-mound in dense bush, on which they sing and dance in an elaborate courtship display performed for potential mates, of which the male lyrebird has several. 4. 🦷 Did you know that Komodo dragons have metal-tipped teeth? Our Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians Benjamin Tapley is part of new research, led by King's College London studying these giant monitor lizards Using state-of-the-art technology to study the teeth of Komodo dragons, they found highly concentrated amounts of iron on each tooth – creating a thin metal coating that helps keep the teeth sharp and ready for use. Komodo dragons are the world’s heaviest and largest lizards, growing up to 80kg in weight and 3m long. However, they’re also listed by IUCN as Endangered – with threats such as climate change, habitat loss and overhunting leading to only an estimated 1,400 adults left in the wild. Excited to share our latest blog post on realistic graph-based trajectory generation for wildlife, published on arXiv \(link: https://bit.ly/3UhJPR7\). The post introduces WildGraph, a solution for generating long-horizon trajectories, akin to wildlife migration, based on a small set of real samples. With experiments on wildlife migration datasets, WildGraph demonstrates improved generalization of generated trajectories and superior performance in benchmark metrics compared to existing methods.
