Always nostalgic to be back in the DMV. It's my first time in D.C. since 2015, when I wrapped up my tenure at the Office of Naval Intelligence and earned my master's in National Security and Strategic Studies. Taking classes in emblematic federal buildings like the Navy Yard and the Rayburn House Office Building made it a uniquely immersive experience. Excited to be out here to participate this week in Callahan & Associates, Inc. hosting of a roundtable for credit union strategy executives. Given the current unprecedented shifts in the financial industry, I frequently find myself reflecting on Nasim Taleb’s "The Black Swan." In it, Taleb, an astute empirical philosopher, suggests that with countless data points unfolding globally at a breakneck speed, our solitary perspective can scarcely forecast events, underscoring the criticality of hedging strategies and collaboration. It reinforces my belief that no one, especially not me, has all the answers. When I believe I've pinpointed an answer, I start by questioning my own conclusion. It's a humbling approach: if I’m right, it’s gratifying, and if wrong, it becomes a lesson learned (and in a way, it makes me right, because I correctly assessed I was wrong 😊). The value of learning from others is immense, so I'm eagerly anticipating the insights from this week.

Michael Neill, this quote really resonates with me. We can easily lose sight of the challenges we have already faced when dealing with creative blocks in the present. It's all fun when past successes are shared with friends, but clinging to the past can make us forget that trying, failing, building, destroying, and creating will always mostly be hard work. We might feel frustrated when thinking about past successes, forgetting what they had cost us, or becoming anxious about our immediately possible inability to repeat them, too. The Truth lies in Trust (and... WORK) when leaning into the power of creation and creativity. #powerofcreation #creativity

I'm always thrilled to see my fellow authors recognized for their achievements, and have long been interested in how the lessons from the transformation of the American West in the pasr may be applied in the future by countries which today share similarities in terrain, (lack of) infrastructure, unique "cattle cultures", indigenous armed ttibes, and massive mineral wealth and agricultural potential! Putting CONTINENTAL RECKONING on my "must-read" list.
