💚🖤❤️Travers J. Bell, Jr along with Willie Daniels co-founded first black-owned investment firm, Daniel’s and Bell, on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1971. The firm started with $175,000 is assets, but with Bell’s prior experience, that amount grew rapidly from series of successful investment decisions. Daniels later ventured off from the firm to enter the restaurant industry. Bell made it his business to give back to the community. His firm specialized in underwriting securities for burgeoning minority-owned businesses and municipal bonds for small Southern towns at a time when few institutional investors were interested in these opportunities. By backing firms, individuals, and towns that had been overlooked by a largely white Wall Street, Bell found a successful market while also spurring development in previously poor and underserved parts of the country. At the time of Bell’s passing in 1988, the firm had grew to the net asset of $15Million. People of black heritage don't need to be inspired or to have higher aspirations. We need networks. I can't stand organisations that 'raise aspirations' when it comes to supporting people of black heritage. We do not need more confidence. We do not need more knowledge. We do not need more aspirations. To level the playing field in the UK, we need access to more powerful networks. Over 70% of high-value business transactions come from networks (not formal applications) in the UK. In 2016 I met the Chairman of a UK Bank and we became good friends. When I started my company, almost 50% of our initial revenue came from introductions that he made. Did he help me write pitch decks? Not really. Did he give me groundbreaking advice about business that I didn't already know? Nope. What he did was take me to dinners with other influential friends, recommend me to networks that he was privy to, and provide references to funding applications that required a credible backer. That was almost £150k generated from one man, who spent about an hour a month (or less even) supporting my business. I spent 70 hours a week in the same period but didn't have the same connections, so couldn't yield the same results for myself. I'm also grateful for others who have backed me and my business in the same way. Shout out to Paul Drechsler pictured here, who took me to dinner recently that has kickstarted more support for my mission. Grateful is an understatement.
