Help us to refresh the NHS South Yorkshire Start with People Strategy   To make NHS services in South Yorkshire the best they can be we need to hear from and work with the people who use them. To achieve this we involve our citizens in a number of different ways.   NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) are required to have a document (or Strategy) that explains how and why we will involve citizens. In South Yorkshire it is called: Start with People: South Yorkshire.   We wrote it over a year ago and a lot has changed since then so we are asking staff, citizens and partners to give us their views to help update our Strategy.   You could tell us how you think we should involve you, what you think to our previous strategy, what you think of the changes we’re thinking about making to our strategy, what you think should be included in our strategy or all of these things.   We are providing a range of ways to give us your views, including via survey, you can email us, attend an online meeting, come to one of our in-person drop-in sessions being held in each of our four places during February (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield), get involved in our readers panel to help shape and review the draft strategy document and where possible there is also an offer to attend your existing meeting if you regularly come together as a local group.   It is planned for the refreshed Strategy to go to the NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) meeting in May 2024. Coming from an NHS family, ensuring the NHS is secure for the future is personal to me. That's why I've got a clear plan to cut waiting lists and deliver a faster, simpler and fairer NHS for patients. Whilst there's much more work to do, I'm pleased that we've cut waiting lists for 6 months consecutively. This hasn't happened by accident - it's because of the incredible work of our NHS staff and the record levels of investment - at over £164.9 billion. That is 13% higher in real terms than in 2019 and by over a third higher in real terms since 2010. But I know we need to go further - and that's why I will take bold action needed to secure a more prosperous NHS. Today, I'm building on our progress by investing in 50 new Community Diagnostic Centres, 250 new and modernised GP practices, and a further expansion in Pharmacy First which will save an additional 10 million GP appointments. Only the Conservatives have a clear plan to secure the NHS’ future, ensuring that you can be safe in the knowledge that the NHS will be there for you and your family when you need it.

In response to your commitment to the future of the NHS, I commend the efforts to reduce waiting lists and the significant investments being made. However, I believe a comprehensive approach to healthcare must also include robust preventive measures. Prevention is better than cure. What is your plan to reduce the prevalence of high fat, sugar, and salt products that are negatively impacting public health and increasing NHS costs? Despite the positive steps taken, these issues continue to undermine the progress made by public health initiatives. Furthermore, why have the food labelling regulations, promised by your party, not been implemented? Clear labelling is crucial in empowering consumers to make healthier choices and reduce the burden on our healthcare system. To truly secure the NHS’s future, we must invest not only in treatment but also in prevention. This dual approach will ensure that we address both the symptoms and the root causes of health issues affecting our population. The Inequalities have grown since 2000. How will you reduce that in the next 5 years?

Ten pharmacies are closing every week on average due to a 30% shortfall in real terms since 2015. The Government report from the Health and Social Care Committee that details this was just released less than two weeks ago. They found that the community pharmacy contractual framework is not fit for purpose and that the funding does not even allow enough to cover the basic cost of medicines. How do you plan to expand pharmacy services even further when we are so short of adequate funding?

Do read this Care Opinion Annual Review 2023-24 - there is much learning here for all who work in the NHS from compliments as well as complaints. Yesterday I completed reading the book "No Rules Rules" by Reed Hastings and Erin Meyer. The central concept that resonated with me was the cultivation of a high-talent density and the empowerment of experts and specialists with decision-making authority. This approach effectively shifts ownership to the right individuals, not just leaders and managers. The article below prompted me to consider organizations that are micromanaged by politicians and senior leaders, with all decision-making power concentrated at the top. This practice effectively removes ownership from those who are most directly involved working with the the processes, systems, and patients – the experts and specialists. They are the ones who deal with the inefficient processes and face the high workload on a daily basis. I agree that politicians should support NHS leaders in innovation and improving health and care. As a next step these leaders should take ownership about creating the environment where individuals have the time and freedom to think creatively, make decisions, and contribute suggestions for improvement. Experts and specialists possess a wealth of ideas on how to digitize and automate manual processes, design effective systems, and enhance efficiency in daily operations to reduce workload and patient waiting times.
