Senior Business Change Manager, University of Manchester | Vice-Chair of Governors at Co-op Academy Walkden.
Bringing the rainbow to this grey and cold Monday, and today's joy comes from supporting Paul Marks-Jones with delivering this month's Allout ally training to The University of Manchester colleagues. Sharing my experiences of being an ally to Allout members, the University's LGTB+ colleague network. Census data tells us that two in five people aren't out to anyone at work, so not able to bring their whole selves to work. As allies, we're asked to: Show visible support to the LGBT+ community. Be familiar with the work of the LGBT+ Staff Network Group ALLOUT. Have knowledge of the University’s different pieces of guidance for LGBT+ staff. Feel comfortable discussing LGBT+ issues. Know where to signpost LGBT+ staff to. Support the annual Stonewall application. UOM colleagues, you can easily sign up for Allout Ally's training, just search "Become an ally" in StaffNet and sign up for an upcoming session. #UOM200 🌈 🙌

🚸 📌 The lack of gender perspective in the implementation of urban sustainability transitions represents a significant gap in the current paradigm. I would like to thank DAAD and Via Austroboreal e.V. (Safaa Charaf Juliana Rivas) for providing this training in gender perspectives in urban development. Despite the fact that we are the ones affected, it is often overlooked that all users and their needs must be considered when implementing projects (mainly when we promote new technologies). It is important to ensure that women, children, the elderly and LGBTQ+ communities (among the variety of users) are visible and heard in each urban project.

How do Young LGBT+ Folx in the UK experience life in the world? A few take aways from a 2021 report from barnardos: common negative experiences of school life as an LGBT+ young person - LGBT+ invisibility in the formal curriculum, and issues about tokenistic and/or inappropriate representations of LGBT+ people within school spaces. - Less than half of the young people who were out felt ‘accepted’, and acceptance was especially low in health settings. - Experiencing a sense of community and / or belonging with other (LGBT+) people was important Full report: https://lnkd.in/eBqUW3J2

A 2019 article in the Harvard Business Review made the case that LGBTQ+ inclusion is good for the economy. As more businesses make this connection, they are stepping forward to make an economic case for non-discrimination protections and against discriminatory laws. Fast forward to Andrea Frank, a Door County resident and recent Canary Fund grant recipient who helped to develop a project in helping businesses show their support for and welcoming the LGBTQ+ community. The Pride Flag Initiative (from Open Door Pride) is designed to offer free pride flags to local businesses or organizations to fly outside of their business to show customers they are a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive place. The goal of our initiative is to have all businesses flying the flag and support the LGBTQIA+ community. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gpC6exH4 Do you have an idea for a project to make your community more welcoming? Our grant application window is open until July 31, 2024. Our application process is easy and could help support your idea with a seed grant between $1500-$5000. Check us out at www.thecanaryfund.org.
