Investment grew up with a physics envy (not to disrespect physics grads, my two daughters both did that at Uni). It has to shift its focus away from its preoccupation with numbers to the world as it is, and that means narrative and numbers, taking in the big picture, connecting the dots, uncovering the iceberg - most of what is important cannot be seen. And there is a phrase for that - systems thinking. The good thing is that all investment professionals are systems thinkers, but they need a bit of guidance on how to become systematic systems thinkers that can use the right tools and strategies to solve today's tangled problems . The curriculum is a step forward towards that.

Program Theory - Day 1 I have recently been doing some research on impact, outcome, and outputs. These are some of the questions that have come up that I seek to answer: How can we measure impact? What is impact and how does it differ from long-term outcomes? How can I prove that the program or intervention is having an impact? How does the United States measure its progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? How did the UN decide on the significant activities to undertake to achieve these goals? What models are being used to explain the success and/or failure of the various interventions to address the problems we are facing in healthcare, education, economy, etc.? What logic models are being used by the UN? These are some of the questions that led me to discover the concept of program theory. Program theory is a way of explaining how and why a program or intervention is expected to work and produce the intended results. By studying this topic, I hope to answer some of the questions above. Why am I posting my learning here? 1. To apply the Feynman Technique: to simplify what I have learned in the simplest of terms that can be understood by the audience. 2. One of the most overlooked and underused aspects of setting goals, is taking the time to truly measure and understand the outcomes of the goals. It is tedious, time consuming, and absolutely requires we measure the right elements. Research shows that many measures used to assess outcomes are too limited in scope; i.e., metrics have not been developed for every key component involved.

During our 7th week at SPARK Deakin, we focused into the financial aspects of our project. TAM, SAM, and SOM which were unknown to me. TAM, or Total Addressable Market, represents the entire potential market demand for a product or service, without any consideration of competition or constraints. It's essentially the big picture of what our offering could potentially capture if it were to penetrate every possible consumer or business in the market. SAM, or Serviceable Available Market, this concept narrows down the scope from TAM to the portion of the market that our product or service can effectively reach and serve. SAM considers factors such as geographical limitations, demographic preferences, and accessibility to our solution. It essentially identifies the segment of TAM that aligns with business' capabilities and resources. SOM, or Serviceable Obtainable Market, focuses on the realistic portion of SAM that we can actually capture. It takes into account factors such as competition, market saturation, and business's marketing and sales strategies. Following that, we explored the economics behind something seemingly insignificant yet present everywhere: the coffee cup. We explored the economics and I can say that the insights are definitely overlooked. This exercise underscored the importance of scrutinizing even the seemingly minor aspects of a business to uncover hidden opportunities for efficiency and optimization.

During my MBA program, I learned that the choice to undertake market research should be guided by the opportunity cost associated with the decision that the research aims to support. Essentially, if the decisions you're making have a minimal financial impact, you might forego market research. However, this approach overlooks a crucial aspect: decisions are part of a dynamic continuum, where they interact with and amplify one another.
