In the latest issue of Bunkerspot, LR's Charlie McKinlay PhD and Environmental Defense Fund's Dana Rodriguez discuss the Sustainable First Movers Initiative Identification Tool launched by LR, EDF and Arup last year. The tool identifies port locations that maximise both the environmental and community benefits of first mover initiatives in support of shipping’s energy transition. Ports are critical enablers to foster first mover initiatives – such as green corridors or energy hubs. Bunkerspot’s February/March 2024 issue featured an article, “Under the radar”, which highlighted the Sustainable First Movers Initiative (SMFI) identification tool developed by LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and Environmental Defense Fund, in collaboration with Arup, to help shipping stakeholders align investment decisions that support the maritime energy transition away from fossil fuels. Ports, as key hubs for transport and energy systems, are critical enablers to foster first mover initiatives – such as green corridors or energy hubs. They play a key role in unlocking investments for the incubation and scale up of electrofuels (i.e. fuels that have net zero carbon emissions throughout their lifecycle) and clean technologies in a way that is sustainable and inclusive of regional stakeholders, especially those most vulnerable to environmental impacts, particularly port-side communities. The SMFI tool identifies port locations that maximise both the environmental and community benefits of first mover initiatives in support of shipping’s energy transition, in a way that is inclusive and sustainable and does not undermine or exploit resources in economically vulnerable regions, like the Global South. You can read the article, “Under the radar”, below. To access the digital version of the issue, go to this link: https://lnkd.in/gzKFfcuw
