Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) opened a newly expanded Ticketing Hall in April, doubling its queue space with an additional 10,000 square feet. The airport also remodeled and upgraded its 35,000-square-foot hall with new public restrooms, ticketing kiosks, wayfinding signage, and space for oversized baggage. Read this article from AIRPORT IMPROVEMENT Magazine to understand how the project team determined the best option to expand, the new features, sustainable components, and more. Check out this insightful article that delves into the often-overlooked world of wayfinding. Whether you're in a bustling airport, a sprawling hospital, or a massive shopping complex, effective wayfinding is the unsung hero that ensures smooth navigation. But all too often, the back-of-house areas aren’t given the same level of consideration as the front-of-house areas, especially in large facilities where navigation matters and where there is a clear distinction between public-facing and staff-only spaces. Do you think wayfinding is essential behind the scenes or is it less important? https://bit.ly/3P1ltsk #weareendpoint #wayfindingexperts #wayfindingconsultants #london #dubai #singapore #wayfindingstrategy #wayfindingdesign #design #wayfindingdesign #navigation #humancentricdesign #userexperience #userjourney #wayfindingsolution

#innovation can be as simple as considering the basic needs of your main user groups and acting on them. The innovation can be as simple as the way you do things, service your customers or meet their needs. I recently posted about the lack of consideration for user needs and experience in UK airport restrooms/bathrooms/toilets. I seemed to have struck a chord with a few people and Roseanna (Rose) May knew I'd love this article from USA TODAY It's great to hear that the US aviation industry is considering how they meet the needs of the changing user groups in #restroom design. I do feel that there is one lazy comment in their about industry standards. If standard doesn't fit, challenge it! So when designing spaces like restrooms it's key to understand the following points: - who will use it - how long have they been without facilities - what will they be bringing with them (luggage, coats, children, etc) - will there be enough room to enter, navigate and leave - is the flow correct for the order of use - is the lighting correct for ambiance and hygiene - are the facilities functional, inspiring, understandable - do the facilities meet multi religious requirements without causing unrequired impact on users (wet floors etc) - are the hand dryers too loud, too powerful, too quick - does someone walk away relaxed or frustrated (in themselves, not related to their movements) And most importantly: - can the cleaners do their job adequately, without impact, to ensure a clean environment is maintained and the design is maintainable for a long period of time without looking dirty, messy, or cheap There is alot to consider. You can't video bathroom usage, so the next best thing is to replicate the wide range of users and the people mass levels yourself to understand the issues users come across. Can you do all this for your products? Can you innovate your service by walking in users shoes? Can you ask what basic changes could elevate the interaction experience with your company? Try it. Pick a customer. Walk their user journey with them. Listen to their feedback. Look out for the challenges they have to overcome. Then, do it again for a different user. And again. Only when you start to see patterns, or changes that could benefit the neediest of users should you go about making changes. Then test and test again. https://lnkd.in/eepRNtGF
During the redevelopment of Terminal B, we were incredibly focused on the design of our restrooms, a critical piece of the guest experience. Terminal B's restrooms were designed to reflect LGP’s vision for a 21st century terminal, emphasizing efficiency, cleanliness and innovation. We enjoyed speaking to Zach Wichter at USA TODAY as he explored trends airport restroom design. #PaxEx #Airports

Artist Specializing in Large-Scale Architecturally-Integrated Art Installations | Transforming Spaces with Art | Partnering with Architects, Developers, and Public Art Administrators
Salt Lake City International Airport setting the new trend in airport design Condé Nast Traveler June 11, 2024 BY DANIEL SCHEFFLER Salt Lake City’s New Airport Is Art-Filled, Multi-Sensorial, and Designed for the Future Phase 3 of the new SLC airport will be unveiled in October, featuring art installations, a mini retail plaza, and greeting room for welcoming arriving travelers. Customary travel wisdom says spending a few hours in a city’s airport doesn’t “count” as experiencing the place itself. That’s because American airports today are often viewed as transitory hubs removed from space and time—like a mall or suburban highway strip—visit one and you could be anywhere in the US. But the airports of the future will be infused with local business, art, and food that let you know exactly where you are in the world upon arrival or departure. That’s what the Salt Lake City airport (SLC) has aimed to do through a $5.1 billion rebuild that’s been unveiled in phases over the past few years, to be completed in 2026. Known as the New SLC, the project is considered the first new US hub airport built in the 21st Century—and this fall is its grand reveal. Come October, the airport will unveil “Phase 3,” which includes a central tunnel connecting concourses A & B (the “River Tunnel”), a new multi-gate expansion, a highly anticipated new greeting room, more impressive art installations, and a mini plaza with retail and food and beverage concessions (with a handful of local brands, like Salt Lake City’s Weller Book Works). Gensler did it again. A "place of sense" is what anyone creating places for people to discover something - a new community, a city, customer experience design - needs to do. Design for how people experience. In this piece about airports, TASK is the most important mode for many. It's the same in community design. Get the task of helping people find - and feel - what they need right, and then they can better experience and appreciate the sense of place we worked so hard to create. Great examples of how to make what you're creating: 1. Comprehensible 2. Invisible 3. Appropriate 4. Personal 5. Credit to Grimshaw Undated JFK International Airport Master Plan – Projects – GRIMSHAW https://lnkd.in/g4_pPean Video Credit to https://lnkd.in/gBZRXQVe The JFK International Airport Master Plan to redevelop the airport into a world-class 21st century airport is being led by Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald. The revitalization plan will result in new terminal complexes on both the south and north sides of the airport. 1). To the south, Terminals 1 and 2 will be replaced with a new 2.7-million-square-feet terminal served by 23 international gates. 2). On the north side, a new 1.2-million-square-feet terminal will connect to the existing Terminal 5 and offer 12 international gates, each able to serve larger wide-body aircrafts. 3). Other expansion projects include a 16-gate expansion for Terminal 4 and a 3-gate expansion at Terminal 8. 4). The plan also includes a centralized ground transportation center that incorporates a new commercial development at the heart of the airport. 5). The entire road network serving the terminals have been redesigned, allowing easier access to the terminals and accommodating increased capacity for curbside requirements. Highway improvements are also planned to ease bottlenecks and reduce travel time from midtown Manhattan and provide an enhanced experience along the journey to the airport. 6). Signage strategy for the entire airport is being re-designed as well, by integrating smart solutions that facilitate intuitive wayfinding through all the terminals and various modes of transport. 7). Other key aspects of the masterplan include landscape design, Airtrain customer experience, and redefining every aspect of passenger journey.
