Last year, Event Vision:2025 published a detailed briefing – Festival Industry Materials and Waste – that not only provides a comprehensive picture of waste challenges experienced by event organisers but also outlines recommendations that will help event professionals make progress on sustainable waste management. The report (authored by Vision 2025, Julie's Bicycle’s, and Resource Futures) and the briefing (by Julie’s Bicycle and Vision 2025) are elements of a three-phase plan that aims to help organisers shape future waste strategies and best practices. At the time, Julie’s Bicycle’s Richard Phillips, a climate change specialist, told StandOut that the report highlighted a huge disconnect between the expectations of festival managers and waste contractors; especially between what organisers think happens to waste and what actually happens. Furthermore, he urged organisers to think about a materials policy that bans problematic materials like disposable vapes, and then think about waste separation. Now, the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) is urging festival organisers to follow Glastonbury’s lead and introduce an outright ban on all disposable vapes. New figures show blazes linked to batteries used in the vapes are rising. Hence, the BMRA says more needs to be done. What are you doing about waste and disposable vapes on your event sites? Is this an issue that’s on your radar #Eventprofs? https://lnkd.in/eq8UJKf7 #Sustainability #Events

The Power of Partnerships in Driving Sustainability at Music Festivals At the recent OHANA Festival, we witnessed the incredible impact of collaboration between C3 Presents, Live Nation, Rob Machado Foundation, and WALLOP WATER USA LLC. Their joint effort encouraged festival-goers to bring refillable water bottles and provided free, triple-filtered, chilled water at the co-branded WALLOP WATER Monster Bars. The result? Over 24,000 single-use plastic bottles were saved from landfills thanks to consuming 3,226 gallons (12,210 litres) of water. 💧 🔍 Powered by Hydro IQ technology, the initiative remotely tracked water usage across 5 Monster Water Bars, with real-time data helping optimize future event planning. This partnership reduced plastic waste and engaged attendees in meaningful, sustainable actions—a perfect example of how technology and collaboration can create lasting environmental change. What’s next for sustainability at festivals? More partnerships like this! #Sustainability #GreenEvents #MusicFestivals #OHANAFestival #PartnershipsForChange #PlasticFree #WaterConservation #TechForGood #WallopWater #RobMachadoFoundation #EventInnovation #EcoFriendlyEvents Ryan Tait Wallop Water Pty Ltd

Festivals are synonymous with joy, celebration, and camaraderie. However, amidst the vibrant atmosphere lies a concerning reality: the staggering amount of waste generated by single-use packaging. As the world grapples with environmental challenges, festival vendors have a unique opportunity to lead the way towards sustainability. One effective solution gaining traction is the adoption of refill pouches. In this article, the team at Poucher delve into the reasons why UK festival vendors should enthusiastically embrace refill pouches. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e6f6sAc7

🎷 Last weekend, I attended the amazing NN North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam, one of my favorites. The festival is working hard to reduce waste by reusing cups for hot drinks and using single-use PET cups for cold drinks to ensure high-quality recycling. Here’s how it worked: 🎸 At the entry, each person received a token. 🎺 When you ordered a drink, you handed in the token or returned your cup to avoid paying an extra €1 for your drink. 🎵 At the end of the day, the crew collected any leftover tokens and cups. Great idea! My quick observations: 🥁 The event did a great job introducing the reuse system for hot drinks. 🎹 Reusable cups had no branding, which prevents people from taking them home. 🎷 Returning a cup in exchange for a token was smooth and easy. Some improvements to consider: 🎶 When handing out tokens, explain how the system works and why. This will need some training for the crew and extra communication. 🎤 There should be return points for tokens and cups all day at the exits. Many people used the system during the day, but returning the last token or cup seemed less important by the end. 🎙 Consider using reusable containers for cold drinks and meals next year to achieve a zero-waste festival! 🌍 Mojo Concerts, it would be great to know the environmental impact achieved. Will you be sharing the return rates for the reusable and single-use cups? #NorthSeaJazz #YoYoBoostReuse #ReduceReuseReturn

"Coldplay’s sustainability—making the planet feel like I'm falling in love, one song at a time!" When weekends are for relaxing, but my daughter is busy trying to book tickets for the upcoming COLDPLAY concert, I couldn’t help but reflect on what this iconic band represents—beyond the music. #Coldplay has become a global symbol of sustainability, demonstrating that entertainment can coexist with environmental responsibility. Their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint is something business owners can learn from. Here are four steps they’ve taken to promote sustainability: Carbon-Neutral Tours: They’ve pledged to reduce their CO2 emissions by 50% and power their concerts with renewable energy. Sustainable Merchandise: Coldplay’s merchandise uses eco-friendly materials, setting an example for how brands can reduce waste. Reforestation Initiatives: For every ticket sold, they fund projects that restore natural ecosystems and plant trees, helping to offset emissions. Encouraging Low-Carbon Transport: They incentivize fans to travel to their concerts using low-carbon methods like public transport or biking. Coldplay has not only set ambitious sustainability goals, but they’ve also delivered on their promises, proving that environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with global success. As business owners, we can adopt similar principles by integrating sustainability into our core operations—taking actions that leave a lasting positive impact on the planet and the people we serve. Because, like Coldplay’s music, sustainability isn’t just a trend—it’s an enduring value. And for many, attending their concert isn’t just an event, but an emotion, a connection that transcends age and unites us all. #Sustainability #CarbonNeutral #BusinessForGood
