I'm a big fan of VC, but the focus needs to be on taking off the shelf technology and assembling it in novel ways, innovating to fill in any gaps, but NOT doing inventing from scratch or focusing on basic, fundamental research where the outcome is not assured. Too many DeepTech projects are really just using VC money as if it were a stream of research grants. That's rarely going to end well. If you don't have the components, science, and engineering know-how firmly in hand to the point where you can get to a minimum viable product (MVP) in little more than a year, then you should NOT be consuming valuable, high-octane VC funds. I'm just as big a fan of basic and fundamental and applied research as I am of VC, but... never the twain should meet. Finish your research BEFORE you get even your first $1 of VC funding. But, that said, these days there is no shortage of VC investors willing to chase after sketchy research projects masquerading as "startups". "At this early stage in the construction of the global quantum innovation ecosystem, investors, philanthropists, startup founders, academics, corporate managers and government representatives should think collectively about the design of the ecosystem they want to build and acknowledge how innovation and industrialization are different from fundamental research. Complain or campaign? Australian quantum startups reacting to the government’s funding of PsiQuantum have a choice in how they spend the sudden wave of media attention. Most seem to choose the latter, reflecting how the heavy drop in private venture capital (especially the “end of the easy SoftBank and Saudi money” as one VC told me) has driven a renewed competition for mindshare and… results. Australia has punched well above its weight in quantum, and while there’s a lot of noise about sovereign funds, what’s most interesting to me are the founders putting their own capital in, and the investors outside of the handful of name brand venture funds who are making repeat investments in this space. That’s the quiet story, and those stories will bubble up as the opportunity presents itself. Whatever the government of the day does, it’s still the capital markets and entrepreneurs that drive the progress from “science to technology to engineering to product”. I’ve had the pleasure to attend the Chicago Quantum Summit 2023 organized by the Chicago Quantum Exchange at the University of Chicago. It is extremely exciting to see the quantum scientific and industrial community coming together to accelerate the development of quantum technologies! 🔬 The Summit gathers some of the best minds in academia, industry, startups, investment, and government. I found interesting, and somewhat alarming, the shared view that the quantum industry is extremely underinvested, especially in the Western world… A couple other trends that I found exciting are the emphasis on quantum networking and communications, as it will be the backbone of the quantum future; and the rapid adoption of quantum-inspired algorithms by industry, especially in finance and healthcare. Congratulations Ilana Wisby and Oxford Quantum Circuits team on the performance and potential underpinning your $100m growth capital raise led by SBI Investment Story via UK Tech News Today also marks the public launch of the company’s 32-qubit quantum computing platform Toshiko. Its platform is aimed at businesses and can be installed in commercial data centres. “To solve the world’s most pressing challenges – from climate change to accelerated drug discovery – we need to put quantum computers in the hands of humanity and at the fingertips of our most brilliant minds,” said Ilana Wisby, CEO of Oxford Quantum Circuits. Oxford Quantum Circuits told UKTN it looks to close in “early 2024”. The Series B saw previous backers Oxford Science Enterprises, University of Tokyo Edge Capital, Lansdowne Partners and OTIF take part. Support from the Japanese investor follows the quantum startup’s ambitions to expand into Japan after it secured £869,000 in extra funds in February. Based in Reading, Oxford Quantum Circuits scooped £38m for its Series A in July last year.
