This report reveals that 25% of CFOs need a formal succession plan, especially in companies with revenues over $10 billion, risking disruptions and shareholder concerns during transitions. Traditional succession planning is often complex and slow, contributing to its neglect. Modern CFOs must be strategic, tech-savvy, and commercially minded, reflecting their expanded role. Boards should prioritize detailed succession plans to ensure stability. Despite mixed feelings, current CFOs must prepare qualified successors for long-term success. The report offers insights into smooth transitions and identifying future CFOs amidst growing role demands.

Even more surprising, the highest proportion (28%) of those companies without a CFO succession plan come from the survey's highest revenue bracket. Deloitte's most recent CFO Insights focuses on why a company needs a formal CFO succession plan. Better to confront it now than to have to identify the next CFO while scrambling to address a key departure!
