Bone Marrow & Leukaemia Awareness Month, observed from 15 August to 15 September, is a crucial time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of bone marrow and stem cell donation. This initiative underscores the life-saving potential of these donations, emphasizing the simplicity of the act and the profound impact it can have on individuals battling life-threatening conditions such as leukaemia. Significance of Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Donation: Life-Saving Potential: Bone marrow and stem cell transplants are vital for patients suffering from leukaemia and other blood disorders. These transplants can replace damaged or diseased cells, effectively offering patients a second chance at life. Simple Yet Impactful: The process of donating bone marrow or stem cells is relatively straightforward. For donors, it involves either a surgical procedure (for bone marrow donation) or a non-surgical method (for stem cells). Despite the simplicity, the donation can be life-altering for recipients, many of whom rely on finding a matching donor for survival. Critical Need for Donors: A key challenge in treating patients with leukaemia is the availability of compatible donors. Registering as a bone marrow or stem cell donor increases the pool of potential matches, significantly improving the chances of finding suitable donors for those in need. Raising Awareness: Public awareness initiatives like Bone Marrow & Leukaemia Awareness Month are essential for educating people about the donation process and encouraging more individuals to register as donors. Increased awareness leads to a higher number of registered donors, which directly correlates with more lives saved. Call to Action: Accord South Africa's post highlights the importance of collective action in spreading awareness. By educating others and encouraging donor registration, communities can contribute to saving lives and offering hope to those battling leukaemia.

Reasons to join the NMDP registry - you can save someone’s life AND the donation process is safe. One common question I get when speaking about NMDP and my experience as a bone marrow donor is about how the filgrastim shots impacted me during and after donation. Here’s a reassuring study through CIBMTR (Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research) about donor safety:
The largest ever long-term study of people who donated peripheral blood stem cells (#PBSC) show that medicines for these donations are safe. Learn more about this recent CIBMTR study: https://lnkd.in/gkPT5rKP

Myth vs. Fact: Marrow Donation Edition 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇: Donation is very painful. 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐓: Donation is less painful than you probably think. Discomfort and side effects vary, but it's nothing like what you see on TV. For PBSC (Peripheral Blood Stem Cell) donation, you might experience headaches, nausea, and tiredness—mainly from the daily filgrastim shots leading up to donation. For marrow donation, there's no pain during the procedure, but you may feel a bit sore afterward. Let's separate the myths from the facts and spread the word about the reality of donation! https://lnkd.in/gXjdtPAw #BeTheMatch

https://lnkd.in/eqyZy9v7 Alina has such a rare form of cancer that only an estimated 20 kids a year in the world get this rare Cancer. Being that’s it is such a low number of cases, Big Pharma refuses to invest in research into rare diseases because its has a small profit margin. They have the financial power to fund research to produce Curative Medicine / treatments for pediatric cancer, but simply refuse too because of money. The point of being a Dr or pharmaceutical scientist is to help people and they’re being stopped because they can’t get the proper funding to possible develop a CURE. Chemotherapy profits are north of 320 billion dollars annually. This is why resharing or donating to #PROJECTSTELLA IS ESSENTIAL. They’re investing so much time and their own money to help this small # of kids with this rare disease.

Founded by Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation is on a mission to change the way cancer is treated and reduce cancer-patient suffering by providing a treatment that is accessible, affordable, and effective. Despite the best approaches, nearly 9 million cancer-related deaths occur yearly. Dr. Green developed Laser-Activated Nano-Therapy (LANT), which completely eliminates tumors in laboratory mice after one 10-minute treatment in just 15 days, without observable side effects, surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Limited by funding, not technological advancements, we are ready to move LANT beyond the laboratory and into humans with tax-deductible donations, independent of the pharmaceutical industry. Your generous support will fund human clinical trials, keep our cancer-killing #tech #affordable for all and ensure we stay #independent. Our actions TODAY can save our lives TOMORROW. Please support by donating at OraLee.org, CashApp & Venmo: $OraLeeFoundation. Director of Marketing I Strategic Nonprofit Marketing Director l Visionary Leader with Expertise in Big Picture Strategy & Impactful Campaigns l Driving Mission Success
Having worked in the nonprofit sector most of my career, I 100% agree that non-profits must adopt for-profit business practices. The mindset that non-profits have to operate on a shoestring budget is antiquated. The community and business sector should embrace non-profits using current for-profit business practices to maximize impact. It’s the effective allocation of funds that creates the change they set out to make.
Having spent the majority of my professional career advocating for the evolution of the charity sector, a meeting with my friends Dr. Louis DeGennaro (former CEO of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) and Troy Dunmire (former COO at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) a couple of years ago stands out as one of the most powerful and straightforward ways we need to view the charity sector. They emphasized that at #LLS, they resent the term "non-profit" because they view LLS as a for-profit organization. Their shareholders are people affected by blood cancer, and their goal every day is to maximize profit for these shareholders. This mindset is no small part of why LLS is one of the world's most successful and effective charitable organizations by virtually every measurement. Dr. Lou and Troy's background in the corporate world undoubtedly played a crucial role in this success. Their commitment to applying for-profit principles to LLS directly resulted in remarkable outcomes. Their approach highlights an essential shift we need in the charity sector. It's about maximizing impact, driving results, and treating their mission with the same urgency and strategic rigor as any for-profit enterprise. This powerful statement reminds us that non-profits and for-profits are far more similar to society's thinking. What do you think about this perspective? How can we continue to evolve the charity sector to maximize our impact? Let's discuss it!

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Annie Huang has been awarded the 2023 Inaugural DECRYPT Research Grant for Rare Pediatric Brain Tumours! 💛 In 2022, Tali’s Fund partnered with six other Canadian charities to create the Defeating Embryonal Cancer in Young People Together (DECRYPT) Research Grant. This initiative intended to challenge the current childhood embryonal cancer landscape by providing funding for a research project that will address an unmet need for these pediatric brain cancers. “Tali’s Fund has been helping to support the research of Dr. Huang and her team at SickKids Hospital since 2008, and we are so grateful for the ground-breaking outcomes of their work to date, as well as for the recognition of the potential impact of their continued research funded by the DECRYPT grant. We are honoured to be part of this unique collaborative effort, and we are filled with hope that this project will pave the way for further strides towards offering safer and more effective treatment options for children with rare brain cancers… options that simply didn’t exist when Tali was diagnosed.” - Kim Doron, Co-Founder and President of Tali’s Fund.
