A plan for a wind farm is not a wind farm. Governments worldwide have set ambitious targets for offshore wind. While this is a good first step, it means nothing without a focus on implementation. On this Global Wind Day, we spotlight the need for action. Under the right conditions, offshore wind can accelerate decarbonisation, create jobs, and deliver clean, affordable power to millions of households. However, we risk missing out unless we get enough turbines in the water. The good news is that we can change this. By rethinking offshore wind auctions, we can turn more plans into actual projects. Key insight into the status of floating wind from the big end of town...

A plan without specifics is an interesting idea.

The offshore wind industry has proven that floating technology works, says Sonja Chirico Indrebø, speaking at Floating Offshore Wind 2023. “But we need to show that it can be scaled, and we can get costs down.” Floating #OffshoreWind can be a game changer for the wind power sector worldwide. By 2050 IRENA has estimated that floating wind farms could cover around 5-15% of global offshore wind capacity. The technology will help to unlock offshore wind’s massive potential by expanding the number of sites available for development to include those much further away from the shoreline, at much deeper depths. #FloatingWind #WindPower

US Pinpoints Up to 8 GW of Offshore Wind Areas in Central Atlantic The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced three final wind energy areas (WEAs) offshore Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, which, if fully developed, could support between 4 GW and 8 GW of offshore wind capacity. The three WEAs total approximately 356,550 acres. The first WEA (A-2) is 101,767 acres and is located 26 nautical miles (nm) from Delaware Bay. The second WEA (B-1) is 78,285 acres and about 23.5 nm offshore Ocean City, Maryland. The third WEA (C-1) is 176,506 acres and is located about 35 nm from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, offshore Virginia. The three final WEAs were developed following engagement and feedback from states, Tribes, local residents, ocean users, federal government partners, and other members of the public. BOEM will publish its Notice of Intent to prepare an environmental assessment of potential impacts from offshore wind leasing in the WEAs on 1 August, which will initiate a 30-day public comment period.
