Medium- and heavy-duty trucks need special charging stations, way more power, and a lot of planning to make the switch. We’re talking about needing almost 700,000 chargers by 2030. Daimler Truck NA, Navistar, and Volvo Group NA sell around 70% of the big trucks in the US, and they’re serious about accelerating their sector’s switch to electric. The graph below shows the economics working against their new coalition, PACT.

"The industry had been waiting for this step for some time: Milence, the truck charging joint venture between Daimler Truck, Traton Group and Volvo Group, has already opened a charging park in the Netherlands and France respectively, and has announced further ones in France and Sweden. However, despite the involvement of Daimler Truck and the Traton Group, Germany has so far been missing from the Milence map. Now, however, the charging joint venture is becoming a reality: the charging park in Vockerode is due to open in July 2024. It is strategically located on the A9 motorway between Berlin and Leipzig and thus on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor. The location next to a new lorry parking area should allow drivers to benefit from various amenities.
The second German charging park is due to follow in September 2024. It will be built at Hermsdorfer Kreuz in Thuringia, another important location on the Scandinavia-Mediterranean corridor, which connects the two major motorways A4 and A9. The site is also conveniently located on the A4 motorway between Poland, Dresden and Frankfurt am Main.
Anja van Niersen, CEO of Milence, comments on the market launch in Germany as follows: “Germany is one of the key countries for freight transport in Europe. It is therefore vital that the right charging infrastructure is in place to accelerate the transition to electrification. Milence is proud to contribute to this movement with two charging hubs that will strengthen the Scandinavian Mediterranean corridor. Our charging hubs at Hermsdorfer Kreuz and Vockerode are a significant step in our commitment to electrifying Germany’s major transport routes and providing a reliable and accessible charging network for heavy-duty vehicles.”
Both Milence sites enable electric trucks of all brands to charge their batteries. The expansion will take place in two phases: Phase 1 will begin with four charging points equipped with CCS (Combined Charging System) chargers with up to 400 kW of power. The expansion in phase 2 will bring additional charging points and the integration of MCS technology (Megawatt Charging System) as soon as it is available."

Milence are not messing around, it's only been a few weeks since I first posted about their e-truck network development plans and they've come out with another major announcement, in Germany this time
Two new truck charging hubs on the important Scandinavian - Mediterranean logistics corridor which will be open in Q3 2024
Following the same format as the others with 4 x 400kW CCS chargers in phase 1 with more CCS and MCS coming in phase 2
By the end of the year, Milence will have at least 8 new truck charging hubs in 6 countries with more to follow
Milence is a joint charging venture between Daimler Truck AG, Volvo Group and the TRATON GROUP (MAN Truck & Bus SE, Scania Group, Navistar Inc and @Volkswagen Truck and Bus)

The newest episode of Trucking Sustainably finds Fleet Equipment Magazine’s Jason Morgan at #ACTExpo, discussing Volvo on Demand with Charles A. Carter, Vice President of Services and Solutions at Volvo Financial Services.
Charles explains how the Volvo on Demand program is making it easier for fleets to adopt and transition to the #VNRElectric by offering tailored solutions with minimal investment. And with a feature unique to the industry, fleets are rewarded for utilizing their VNR Electric trucks – the more they drive, the less it costs them per mile. https://lnkd.in/gsNCKfKv

🌍Electric Commercial Vehicles: Addressing the Affordability Challenge🚛
The shift to electric commercial vehicles (EVs) is crucial for a sustainable future, but affordability remains a significant barrier. In a recent article from Automotive World, EO's Director of eBus, Philip Kershaw shares insights on how high upfront costs are hindering widespread adoption and what needs to be done to support commercial fleet electrification. EO is committed to making electric vehicles more accessible for fleets globally.
This is why we offer a Charge Assurance and CaaS offering to help fleets that do not have access to the upfront CAPEX start their electrification journey. Tackling these financial challenges is essential for accelerating the transition to greener fleets. Read Automotive World's article below to learn more about the affordability issues and potential solutions. HDV announcements are coming thick and fast, modular scalable battery solutions such as the ones mentioned in the article below are a great way to manage payload versus range and will help fleets achieve the right balance between range and costs. We've been working with fleets and TCO cost parity is coming closer in high value uses cases. Range in the region of 500km looks feasible with OEM's like Mann claiming up to 800km!

Unlike hybrid passanger cars, 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁. Only one of the big manufacturers - Scania - has taken on a challenge of creating a combustion-electric drive truck, but now intends to withdraw.
During an interview with the Dutch industry magazine, TTM.nl, Fredrik Allard, director of electromobility at Scania, announced that 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 (𝗛𝗘𝗩 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗛𝗘𝗩) 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿. The collection of orders is to officially stop, and production will soon begin to discontinue. Vehicles already built will still receive technical support.
As it turned out, transport companies want to have either a regular combustion truck or they are experimenting with full electric trucks.
With the date of the ban on the sale of combustion engine cars in Europe coming soon (2035) this might mean that for many transport companies it very well may soon mean electric trucks or none.
