Feels odd coming across this as I’m writing a (creative essay? In depth walk through? Disjointed thought process? Outlet of grieving?) on creating a fragrance entirely inspired by an extremely influential genre of music in my life in memory of a recently lost loved one. Only mine is not nearly as scientific and more focused on the creative (and musical) aspect. It’s also not in French. It probably makes far less sense as well seeing as I’m running a high fever, and after watching Portrait of a Lady on Fire almost 3 times it felt like I could understand what they were saying without reading the subtitles. Though I don’t speak any French. (This is obviously excluding the few times in which the perfumers spoke in English) Fragrance is something that is intrinsically liked to memory and emotion to me. In fact memory, or lack there of, is the core condition that sparked my passion and journey into fragrance. Everything happens for a reason. Last Christmas I got my mom Mary Anderson Libre. (I want to clarify that she is not my most loved one, my mom is very much in good health… maybe a bit tired from her vacation to Florida, but I don’t want to worry anybody who knows her). She picked it out, it was what stuck out the most to her. She had the option to pick out any perfume. There was no budget on it. Every time I smell Libre I associate it with feeling close to her. There is a beautiful power in perfumery, just like there is a beautiful power in music, both core art forms that have helped me with my memory issues. Life is mysterious. It is unexpected. Life is a spectrum of emotions and feelings that meet at a specific point to form a memory. Life is beautiful, and precious. Just like perfumery, just like music, life is art.

How does a perfumer get inspired to find the perfect notes? The creation of a fragrance comes close to that of creating a musical symphony; it starts with reaching the perfect accord, before the composition is built. Discover the creative steps it takes for our perfumers to convey the emotion, identity, and heritage of our brands through fragrance in The Art & Science of Fragrance, Episode #3: Unleashing Creativity. #LorealLuxe #BehindTheScent
