As a #security team, it is absolutely critical that you actively manage your stakeholder set with a recurring meeting. The security function today is not a technical function anymore. It's not about firewalls, or antivirus, or physical door locks, or zero day mitigation. The #infosec team and the #CISO are addressing a business problem, unlocking the revenue and managing the cost from negative events in the BUSINESS. We typically see our IT colleagues as close relationships to manage. We have lists of who is responsible for what application, what system. We know who to call - and meet with them regularly - for the infrastructure projects and the next steps on new sites or site changes. But do you talk to your legal counsel at least monthly? Do you review privacy impacting changes with counsel? Does the security team have a representative to the sales organization who can help with crafting security and privacy schedules to your customers? Are you working with finance, to maintain traceability between security spend to the business units supported, and the asset value protected by in-flight programs? When you get into the incident process, do all of your IR team have clear identification in the playbook when to bring in legal? And Finance? And HR? When is the last time you reviewed how this is going? Do you have a strategy for improving those relationships? When is the last time you went out for lunch or dinner? You are there to protect the business. Finance, Privacy, business executives, legal team members they are part of your success, and sometimes they need to be there to protect you. From myopic bias towards security without the picture of what the business is doing. From the consequences of bad decisions. From a mistake. Invest in your people to people relationships outside the technical domain. Together, you identify, plan, and solve these business level challenges.
