Her commitment, often involving emergency vet care, prompted a significant life shift, leading her to settle in a house. Despite the challenges, Vanya's son grew up surrounded by the companionship of cats, fueling her lifelong dream of establishing a shelter to provide a safe haven for vulnerable animals. Despite investing significant funds each month, Vanya faces limitations in time and resources. Determined to make her dream a reality, Vanya is initiating the creation of a shelter in her city, Plovdiv, with plans for expansion. This cause is deeply personal, and she seeks legal and financial support to establish an organization, acquire land, collaborate with a building company, and hire staff. Vanya envisions a network of shelters, fostering community involvement through monthly Zoom meetings and aiming to provide refuge for every homeless animal. Despite common hurdles faced by those willing to help animals, Vanya urges the community not to ignore animals in need, especially during harsh winters when newborn animals are at risk. Our true purpose in life? Giving back to nature! We are natural born consumers and we need a lot of care and attention. Therefore if we can do it, giving back is an empowering and eye opening experience. Our personal mission, goal and purpose in life is different from one person to another, we're all here to fulfil a different purpose. But there is a common purpose that is shared between all of us and that is giving back to nature, looking after the environment, animals and one another. In this way we are giving back to nature. This is a common duty and it requires systems and processes in place, but recycling for example is a good example of looking after the environment, giving to animal protection is a good charity and doing jobs that support others is a good way to give back to others. So this adds value to who we are and gives us a mature vision in life. Giving back is our common purpose.

Oh how I love an elegant, effective, FUN system 😻 My son and I started volunteering with the kitties at Our Companions Animal Rescue and Sanctuary (amazing facility!) and, as an organizational nerd, I am IN LOVE with their system. Here's why: 1) It creates a win for ALL the stakeholders - The cats each get the attention they need, the volunteers know exactly how they can contribute the most value each day, the staff know how much attention each kitty needs so they can fill in gaps, and future owners get a pet that is well-adjusted and loved. 2) Its SIMPLE! - After interacting with a kitty, you move a magnet to indicate what kind of attention that kitty got: play, cuddles, or just a sharing-space visit. Volunteers that come later in the day can see who needs attention and what kind of attention they could most benefit from. 3) It solves the problem by putting connection and relationships at the forefront - Yes, litter needs to be scooped and floors need to be swept, but kitties (and humans!) thrive when their emotional needs are met. They need connection and love on THEIR terms. Some kitties want more play time, some want more pets, and some kitties just like when you're in the room, no touching, please. I bet we can all think of humans that fit each of those categories too! Deep, loving, trusting relationships are built by respecting each others needs and that only happens when our needs are clearly communicated AND honored. 4) The expectations are clear - If you get scratched, it's mostly on you. Each cat is given a level and a clear explanation of their likes and dislikes. As long as you respect them, they will respect you. The staff has made it abundantly clear how you can create a win-win experience going into each kitty's room. Every part of the system is an "of course". Nothing is asking too much of the volunteers, the communication is respectful and clear, and the best interests of the cats, the volunteers, and the staff are all taken into account. That's how you build a good system 😽

🐾 Have you ever thought about volunteering for an animal shelter, sanctuary, or rescue facility? We've all seen those commercials...you know the ones. The ones that feature animals who have been mistreated, abandoned, or ones who simply ran from home and got lost. If you have a dry eye after watching one of those ads, we need to find out if you actually have a beating heart in your chest. Truth is, it's easier to click away from something that's uncomfortable on TV than it is to try to do something about it in Real Life. It can be overwhelming when we try to think of the best ways to help. I've spoken to people who are involved in these facilities, and oftentimes, all they need from volunteers is just an extra set of hands to help with the animals while they're doing the heavy lifting. From feeding and grooming to playing and cuddling, these are the best - and most fulfilling - ways to make a difference in the lives of these little critters. 😍 Even better, some of these organizations have a Sleepover Program! What? A SLEEPOVER, you say? 🐶🐱 Volunteers have the chance to take one an adorable dog or cat home for a sleepover, giving these animals a taste of home life and extra love. Who doesn't wanna have a sleepover with a ball of furry cuteness? It's as good for our mental health as it is for theirs. 🤳 If this sounds great to you, reach out to local animal rescue and shelter organizations, and let them know you'd love to do something to help. They will love you forever. And you might just get licked. By an animal, I mean. 🌟 In The Meantime: Practical Ways You Can Help: Volunteer: Spend time with our animals and help with daily tasks. Sleepover Program: Take a dog or cat home for a night of love and comfort. Donate: Every bit helps us provide the best care for our animals. Adopt: Give a forever home to a deserving furry friend. Reading an awkward word in a sentence feels like driving too fast over a speed bump in my mind 🚗 So, here's a TIP for readability... → Rather than forcing a word that doesn't quite work, what if you approach the whole thought in a different way? An example... A wildlife nonprofit asked me to help them come up with a more powerful word than "undesirable" to describe the world record this particular bird species held for its declining numbers. 🦜 Their previous copy: "This bird holds an undesirable world record." Rather than just thinking of a new word, I considered the whole statement. 🦜 My rewording: "This bird holds a world record no one would desire." The updated version is... • Less clunky (simpler words) • More emotive (inspires empathy) TIP: Look beyond a 'one word swap' and say the whole thought in a different way. ------------------ I'm Maddie, Co-Founder of Kind Word.
