Unfortunately, our health system — like virtually every other health system — is built around sickness rather than healthcare, with no clear business model to prioritise preventive health over treating illnesses. Simply put, there is no money to be made in the short term. The market fails for health (rather than sickness care), and the Government has to step in to overcome this market failure. Regrettably, ‘future health’ is something not even our present selves will invest in seriously in our day-to-day lives, let alone on a system-wide scale. Maximising value from healthcare spend is not a priority for most healthcare providers, who are instead commercially motivated to provide more and more high-priced services https://lnkd.in/g84k4eYg

We are headed toward something different, I hope, and can't get there fast enough. ---- "In early June 2022, I took a pretty bad spill. Hands flew up in the air and I came crashing down on my rib cage. It took a few minutes before I could catch my breath and I felt sharp pain walking, inhaling, sitting, trying to get to the subway. When I got home, as I normally did when something hurt or I felt sick, I needed to give it a night to see if it would heal on its own. In the morning when I went to make my coffee in the morning, I blacked out on the kitchen floor from pain. Too nervous to go to the emergency room (where bills can be thousands of dollars that I didn’t have), I found out that Urgent Care would charge a flat fee of $250 for an evaluation and would flag additional costs before performing any other services. I went immediately and found out I had a fractured rib. I was used to this dance. It had happened a few years earlier when I had a gum infection and started going in and out of consciousness from the pain. I had tried to avoid eating on that side of my mouth for weeks and the pain became unbearable. I didn’t have the money to go to the dentist (bills that also often come to $1K or more for procedures that go beyond a filling) so I waited, and waited. I had also gotten used to hearing, ‘why did you wait so long?!’ ‘You should take better care of yourself.’ I saw recently that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation put out a call for proposals to research the impacts of the ‘Financialization of U.S. Health Care’. I cried again. This is the kind of research we need, less about quality outcomes on limited resources (they are only limited because of what we have normalized in this country). Quick read describing the post pandemic health system landscape... "hospitals are by nature too often dysfunctional, siloed and highly bureaucratic institutions where doctors are paid to diagnose and treat illness, which encourages higher utilization of tests and other diagnostics. This leads to higher costs and, with no linkage to outcomes, declining quality of patient care." Overtesting is not associated with better results. In fact, If you're using inferior diagnostics, you're delaying the diagnosis and the opportunity to intervene, which sends the patient on a diagnostic oddessy. In that oddessy, the provider health system benefits perversely by performing more unnecessary tests. We can do better. #irhythm https://lnkd.in/eAq936nq

NEW BLOG. Chronic illness results in the death of 41 million people each year, which is equivalent to a shocking 74% of all deaths globally. With these growing numbers plus an #ageingpopulation, it is clear the current reactive model of healthcare is not sustainable. Promoting #patienteducation, implementing screening campaigns, and activating patients to take charge of their own healthcare can all help transform the current system to reduce the burden on services and pave the way for a healthier, happier population. Read the #blog: https://lnkd.in/es3HdHqm

At COVID’s initial wave, officials attested that a relevant portion of early deaths was caused by a lack of health system preparedness and knowledge of the best care protocols, as much as the virus itself. This global health crisis uncovered the dearth of patient population real-time intelligence and flexible health system structures, further underscoring the need to accelerate a real-time healthcare system (RTHS). #COVID19 #healthtech #RTHS #healthcare
