While the endless discussions on gender equality and closing the gender gap are definitely an indicator of progress, these conversations often circle back to the age-old question: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? 🤔
In her recent piece on The Star Media Group Berhad, RYTHM Foundation Chairperson Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran pondered the cultural barriers and prevailing mindsets that have eroded women’s voices for generations, and outlines what must happen for us to dismantle the structures that perpetuate violence and prevent progress.
As this article is behind a paywall, we’ve put together a quick and easy breakdown below! 👇🏽

Organization Must Prioritize Gender Equality
There is a need for organizations to understand the importance of gender equality and their responsibility in ensuring that equity is reflected in their policies, procedures and practices.
Women often face several forms of micro-aggressions and workplace tensions as a result of these inequalities based on their gender, race or aspects of their identity and can cause acute stress and anxiety, negatively impacting and impeding women's career and health.

SDG 5 is about achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. It calls for ending discrimination, violence, and harmful practices while ensuring equal opportunities in leadership, education, and economic participation. Gender equality isn’t just a fundamental human right—it’s key to building a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. Let’s #EmbraceEquality and work towards a future where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender. #SDG5#GenderEquality#Empowerment
To those who think that gender equality will fix itself over time as “culture does its work”, and we don’t need to intervene with (for example) quotas in board rooms, management postions, etc.
Here is a thought experiment for you:
Would slavery have abolished itself if we had “left culture to do its work”?

IWD is getting a right bashing these days, but I guess that was always coming. 🤷🏾♀️
So many are disillusioned by the slow/no progress that's being made in terms of gender equality.
And within the top three areas that women are unhappy with slow/no progress is always the gender pay gap.
So, I have a proposition for organisations that need to move beyond the 'normal' IWD actions onto something more meaningful and impactful.

How can organisations recognise International Women's Day in a meaningful way?
I remember in my role as an Office Manager, many moons ago, me and some of the HR team would look forward to celebrating International Woman's Day. We'd sit and brainstorm the posters, any significant women we'd want to spotlight and organise an afternoon tea to unite all the women across the business.
We had the best intentions. But on reflection, we were missing the point.
These efforts did nothing to actually change the status quo for women within the business, it didn't address our gender pay gap, it didn't address microaggressions women endure, it didn't confront our lack of women within Senior Management.
So what can organisations do to recognise International Women's Day in a meaningful way?
💫 Host an educational workshop focusing on the challenges women face in the workplace. Perhaps bringing in an external speaker to share their experiences and insights. This gives an opportunity for learning, discussion and raising awareness within your organisation.
❤️ Organise a volunteer activity or project that supports or raising funds for a women's causes. This could involve participating in mentoring programmes for girls, supporting a women's shelter, or initiatives aimed at improving women's health. Giving back to the community reinforces the organisations commitment to social responsibility and gender equality.
🤝 Use IWD as an opportunity to commit to reviewing your policies and practices to ensure they are gender-inclusive and promote equal opportunities for all employees. This could involve assessing recruitment and promotion processes or reviewing your flexible working policy and culture (amongst others!). This proactive approach to creating a more inclusive culture and equitable workplace will be appreciated and valued far more than a few free cakes (however well intended the cakes may be)!

Achieving gender equality and women’s well-being in all aspects of life is more crucial than ever if we want to create prosperous economies and a healthy planet.
However, we are facing a key challenge: the alarming $360 billion annual deficit in gender-equality measures by 2030.
This year for International Women’s Day consider ways you can invest in women to accelerate progress.
Whether it’s a friend, mentor, or even yourself - who do you celebrate this #IWD24?

Women's Economic Empowerment is a crucial aspect of gender equality but that empowerment should cut across all sectors and benefit everyone. Gender equality isn't about favoring one gender over another; it's about ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and treatment for all individuals regardless of gender. While initiatives like #internationalwomensday2024 focus on inspiring and accelerating progress for women, the ultimate goal is to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone can thrive. Acknowledging and addressing the intersecting forms of discrimination and inequality faced by women, men, and gender-diverse individuals is essential for achieving true gender equality and empowerment for all.
