Celebrating a new milestone in #EducationForAll and #DisabilityInclusion! Continuing the success of our efforts at Ghana National Inclusive School (GNIS) over the last few years with our on-ground partner, The ANOPA Project, we’re expanding to support two new schools in Cape Coast and Accra! Disability rights and autism acceptance continue to be a challenge in developing nations around the world. But through this expansion, we hope to shift perspectives on disability and neurodiversity, and make societal inclusivity the norm in West Africa. 📚 #WhatWeAreReading 🌍✨ December 3rd was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and we encourage you to check out the recent UNESCO-IICBA article, "Inclusive Education: Reaching Children with Disabilities in Africa". 💡 The article sheds light on the educational disparities faced by children with disabilities in sub-Saharan Africa. And what can be done to create safe and accessible education for all. 👓 Specific interventions, such as school eye health programs, can make a significant impact on inclusive education, especially for children with poor vision. A study by EYElliance and The World Bank found that children with visual impairment are less likely to ever enroll in school, complete their primary education, and be literate than children without disabilities. They may also perform less well on assessments. ✅ Simply screening children for visual impairment and providing eyeglasses to those who need them could make a major difference. Unfortunately, the coverage of school eye health programs is extremely low in Africa. UNESCO-IICBA and EYElliance are finalizing a new study providing a cost-benefit analysis of these programs to encourage scale-up. Preliminary results suggest high benefit to cost ratios. 🌐📚 We encourage you to join the movement! Inclusion and accessibility are key to creating a fairer, more sustainable future for all. 📖 Article Link: https://lnkd.in/guxYmZgr #InclusiveEducation #EducationForAll #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities #UNESCO #EducationInAfrica

[ 🗒 Free Access Article] "Inclusion of children with disabilities in Ethiopian mainstream schools. An implementation evaluation of an inclusive education programme" Inclusive education (IE) programmes aim to include children with disabilities in mainstream schools by providing quality education in a barrier-free environment. While IE is now integral to the global development agenda, many questions remain around how best to implement IE programmes given the varying contexts and challenges presenting across developing countries. “One Class for All” is an IE programme financed by Light for the World, an international non-governmental organization (NGO), and implemented by 14 Ethiopian partner organisations. The authors of this article used a descriptive implementation evaluation design combining qualitative and quantitative elements to assess the extent, quality and satisfaction of IE programmes delivered by a sample of Light for the World implementing partners. Data included routine implementation monitoring data, survey of all implementing partners, key informant interviews and structured observations of schools and participants at sampled schools in Ethiopia. The evaluation mainly indicated a need for more structured development plans for each school and a more structured teacher training programme. This evaluation contributes to the limited literature on implementing an inclusive education programme in an African country. Hey everyone, In our journey at Kajiado Disability Inclusion Forum (KADIF), we've learned something crucial: diversity isn't just about what you see on the surface. It's about embracing all the unique perspectives and talents that make us who we are. Today, I want to talk about disabilities. We all have them in one way or another, some visible, some not. But instead of seeing them as barriers, let's start seeing them as opportunities. At KADIF, we've seen firsthand how disabilities can spark innovation and creativity. They give us a different lens through which to view the world, and that's something worth celebrating. So, let's shift our mindset. Let's create workplaces and communities where everyone feels valued and included, regardless of their abilities. It's time to start focusing on what people can do, not what they can't. I'd love to hear your thoughts. How can we make Kenya a more inclusive place for people with disabilities? Let's keep the conversation going. Operations Director | Project Management | Professional Property Management | Thai-English Interpreter | IT Staffing & Outsourcing | Recruitment
On May 3rd I attended the first joint event by the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT)'s Education and Skills and SME committees focusing on "ESG: Inclusiveness, Diversity, Skills, and Disability Employment for SMEs" at TK Hall, Sasin School of Management. The focus was on encouraging more companies to be socially responsible organizations. Here's some of the points presented. 1. In Thailand there are approximately 3.7 million persons with disabilities, with around 2.2 million registered. 2. There is not enough access to education for persons with disabilities. - 86.7% only have a primary education. - 65.3% (5-24 years old) are not in the education system at all. 3. Almost 90% of neurodivergent students will drop out and only be able to get a primary school education. 4. In the current education system, teachers mostly do not have training or experience to work with people with disabilities. 5. Out of the 2.2 million people with disabilities registered, (40% are currently unregistered) only 29% have jobs, with 64% willing and able to work, but unemployed (or no data about their work). As a mother of a person with a disability, these numbers are scary. Finding support, education options and solutions have been a constant challenge. My son is one in those numbers. His future is in those statistics if we cannot find a way to change it. How to change it? I still don't know. But I know that seminars, events and awareness like this one make a difference, and I am hopeful for the joint effort of all of us to move forward for a better future for all persons with disabilities. Thank you Vibeke Lyssand Leirvag, Steps, Sasin University, JFCC and the Committees. From this mum, thank you for your effort to make a difference. #inclusion #diverseworkplaces #futureofThailand #pwd #socialresponsibility *Information from Department of Empowerment of persons with disabilities, 31 June 2020, and PWD survey, National Statistic Office, 2020

Reflecting on Disability Inclusion in Electoral and Educational Processes Throughout my advocacy work with the Zambia Federation of Disability Organisations (ZAFOD) in 2021, I consistently highlighted the gaps in inclusivity within our electoral process. My media appearances on platforms like Hot FM's Hot Seat, Radio Phoenix's Let the People Talk, 5FM's Burning Issue, and MUVI TV's Assignment among others have emphasized that the electoral process in 2021 was not fully inclusive for persons with disabilities. Engaging with political parties and government ministries, including the Electoral Commission of Zambia, we advocated for the rights of persons with disabilities to participate fully in public life. This experience has shown me that the challenges we face are also opportunities. In my current role as Education Advisor for the Digital School Project, I see a significant opportunity to leverage technology to improve learning outcomes for learners with disabilities. By targeting these learners with focused interventions, we can begin to make meaningful changes. In the Digital School Project, we are leveraging the use of technology (tablets) to deliver flexible educational programs to out of school adolescents with the goal that they sit for their Grade 7 examinations and proceed to advance in their education or take a skills path. This intervention builds on skills obtained from foundational literacy and numeracy programs. Learners with disabilities can greatly benefit from such interventions if we ensure that teaching and learning materials are in accessible formats. The inadequate accessible election materials mirror the lack of accessible teaching and learning materials for learners with disabilities. This is a call to action for more investment in making the education sector inclusive. Let's work together to ensure that every learner, regardless of their abilities, has access to quality education and is presented with an opportunity to advance as far as they can in their education. Here is a link to some of my advocacy work on disability inclusion: https://lnkd.in/dEdt9jsa #Inclusion #InclusiveEducation #DigitalEducation #InclusiveGovernance
