We are excited to share a new blog post on the Tampere Urban Research Perspectives blog: "Suitcases Full of Memories – Urbanum ry's Study Excursion Abroad", written by Ella Hyvärinen. This post highlights the first-ever international study excursion organized by Urbanum ry, the Guild of Sustainable Urban Development at Tampere University. Supported by the STUE Action Grant, students travelled to the Netherlands and Belgium, visiting companies and organisations in the field of sustainable urban development. The trip included visits to innovative organizations such as Metabolic in Amsterdam, Defacto Urbanism in Rotterdam, and the European Commission in Brussels. The experiences provided valuable insights into sustainable urban development and inspired the students in their future career paths. Read more about their journey and the lessons learned in the full blog post: https://lnkd.in/da72JRKt

Exciting News: eCHOing project has successfully completed its final conference and last in-person meeting after two years of hard work. The consortium and its associated partners finally met at Pisa at Scuola Santa Anna for a conference to discuss inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary work done throughout this period. Representatives of NGOs, students and university scholars met on the 17th of April to discuss project implementation, risk management, and lessons learned. The conference has celebrated what eCHOing has been about - forging relationships with others across traditional lines of differences, disciplines, languages, culture, national, and geographical borders. It has fostered the interaction of people and the exchange of ideas for creativity. The thread through all of this has been open innovation (OI), which is fundamentally about bringing people together. All the presentations demonstrated this aspect of the project. eCHOing project was funded by the EU through the Erasmus plus KA 220 and was born in January 2021. It highlighted the interactions between cultural heritage organisations (CHO) and institutes of higher education, students and end users, as well as the use of OI and digital technologies to deepen human relationships across organisations and within CHOs. The project focuses on a cross-disciplinary and inter-cultural nature of the collaborations between Cultural heritage organisations and NGOs that gave students the opportunity to see beyond their own narrow disciplines, and their own cultural, educational, language contexts, giving them the possibility to learn about social justice and not just social value and put it in practice through project implementations. Inviting small & medium-sized CHOs into the university world, as valuable collaborators has been an an important process in the joy of sharing knowledge and working perspectives through an "open" room and a working methodology that allows free flow of ideas to circulate and grow. It has been an amazing journey. Thank you all for joining and Santa Anna for hosting us!! Following the footsteps of the Excover project 👣 Want to know more about tourism development in small inland towns of Italy and Croatia and how sustainable tours and tourist products can be created after working with locals? Visit the Excover project website and social media channels or check out this video which can show you the whole picture! 🎞 Along with the STEFAN project (Erasmus+ program), the approach of the ETHNIC project is based on a similar Interreg project that was implemented for 3 years and ended in 2022. That project is Excover - Experience, Discover & Valorise Hidden Treasure Towns and Sites of the Adriatic Area. 🔎 This project is a great baseline for all ETHNIC activities, and because a few Mountain Union Montefeltro municipalities were involved in the project's capitalization activities, it can be used for transferring knowledge, identifying tourist points of interest, mapping and organising participatory planning processes for local stakeholders. 🗺 https://lnkd.in/dakJzpfc #interregethnic #interregitalycroatia #italy #croatia #SustainableTourismDevelopment #ecoculturaltourism #crossborder #Excover https://lnkd.in/dAz4iK9k

🎓 I am thrilled to share the culmination of my academic journey! I recently defended my Master’s thesis, "Anchoring Harmony: Revitalizing the Maritime Cultural Landscape of Hanseatic Cities for a Resilient Future," under the guidance of Professors Carlo Peraboni and Nora Lombardini. This research explores critical challenges in Hanseatic cities, including the loss of identity, over-tourism, and declining maritime industries. By studying 42 cities and collaborating with residents, maritime experts, and tourists, I developed a framework that blends historic preservation with contemporary urban strategies. The focus is on preserving cultural identity, fostering sustainable tourism, and strengthening intercity collaboration. Key outcomes of this research include: + Tackling Local Challenges with Broader Vision: Addressing immediate urban issues such as socio-economic transformations, while paving the way for regional collaboration on pressing concerns like climate change. + Fostering Intercity Collaboration: Establishing a robust legal and organizational framework that enables Hanseatic cities to share knowledge, resources, and strategies, creating a unified response to global challenges. + Promoting Cultural Resilience: Strengthening the unique maritime heritage and identity of these cities, ensuring their cultural significance is preserved for future generations. + Advancing Sustainable Tourism: Encouraging practices that balance economic benefits with the preservation ofcultural and environmental integrity. + Empowering Local Communities: Enhancing awareness and engagement among residents to foster pride in their cultural landscape and active participation in its future development. For those interested, a snippet of my thesis is below, and the full book is accessible on ResearchGate through the link below: https://lnkd.in/eGxCYxSj My journey at Politecnico di Milano was instrumental in shaping this work. Engaging with a vibrant international community enriched my understanding of urban development, heritage, history, and sustainability. Collaborating with peers from diverse backgrounds refined my research skills and broadened my perspective, equipping me to tackle complex, interdisciplinary challenges. I am excited to apply the insights gained from this experience to impactful and innovative projects moving forward.
