Since 2016, Firmrock Children Helper has supported vulnerable children in the Migwani region with education, clothing, and basic needs. Over the years, we’ve expanded to include farming, tree nurseries, counseling, and community development. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, sustaining our children’s mission became a challenge due to a lack of donor funding. After much thought, we made the difficult decision to shift our focus. While we cherish the impact we made in children's lives, we are now directing our energy toward addressing agricultural and water challenges in dry regions like ours. Our new mission, Firmrock Agri-Water Initiative, focuses on sustainable farming and water solutions to empower our community in Migwani. We’ve already made significant progress, but to scale our efforts, we urgently need resources for farming activities. As proud supporters of Save the Kiwi, some lucky Petdirect.co.nz team members had the honour of being a part of a health check, tagging and release of an endangered kiwi into the wild. ⁠ For those unfamiliar, Save the Kiwi is a dedicated organisation working tirelessly to protect our national icon, the kiwi. It’s back! The Great Scartho Seed Swap event is returning for the second year, following the success of 2023 and I’m so excited. A local, in person event open to anyone who wants to come along. (see invitation for event details) How it works: Bring seeds (if you have any) -       Seeds you’ve saved or have spare (please no seeds from F1 hybrids or bought vegetables as they won’t breed true) -       Label with the name, variety and a short description if you can -       Add information on the source (‘saved with knowledge and care’ or ‘extra from packet not required’ etc) -       Pop you seed packets into the appropriate trays set out separating into ‘flowers’ or ‘vegetables’ Take the seeds you need -       Have a look through the donated seeds for any you need -       If you haven’t got any seeds to bring you’re still very welcome to come and collect some seeds, I just ask that you pay it forward next year when you have spare seeds from this years harvest I don’t ask for any donations, nor do I plan to. If your gardens are overflowing, don't let your produce go to waste! Donate any extras to a local food pantry like @WayForwardResources who will pass on your garden extras to do good in your community! We're thankful for the bounty that comes in from our pantry gardens, as well as donations from home gardeners. We gladly accept garden produce from home gardens. Please follow the guidelines below to donate your produce: Clean as much mud and dirt as possible off the produce you plan to donate, but do not wash. Remove stems and leaves. Only donate produce that you would buy for your own family. We are unable to use produce that is overripe, overgrown, moldy, seriously blemished, covered in dirt, or has mushy spots. If you use pesticides in your garden, always read and follow the label recommendations. Solar-powered wells help provide water for Buffalo on remote Native American ranches. Some of our Buffalo caretakers live on ranches where accessible water sources are deep underground or miles away. For some, the only solution is a well pump system that runs on solar power. Quality systems can range from $3,000 to more than $10,000 each. The Buffalo need fresh water, and solar-powered wells can provide that without miles of electric lines. No donation is too small! Every dollar counts toward providing more fresh water for Buffalo herds. Any donations past our goal will be used to help other Tanka Fund rancher partners with their infrastructure needs. Leading Firmrock Children Helper since 2016 has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. We started by supporting vulnerable children in Migwani with education, clothing, and basic needs, while also running programs in farming, tree nurseries, counseling, and community development. But when the pandemic hit, things became tough. Despite all efforts to keep our children's care mission alive, the lack of donors and mounting requests from parents for school fees and other essentials became overwhelming. As much as it pained me, I had to make the difficult decision to shift our focus. Our last children's project, led by R.K. Brooks and others successful fundraiser, provided school uniforms for over 30 kids. It was a beautiful moment that reminded me of the power of community support. However, I realized we needed a more sustainable path moving forward. That’s why today, I’m excited to share our new direction: Firmrock Agri-Water Initiative. We're focusing on sustainable farming and water solutions for dry regions like Migwani. Agriculture is the backbone of our community, and access to water is a pressing need. With your help, we can make a real impact. Growing Hope in Rural Communities Living in a rural area with limited access to nutritious food can be challenging, but it also presents unique opportunities to make a difference. For the past three years, my daughter and I have dedicated a portion of my garden to growing red beets for donation to my community. Despite facing a moderate drought, the harvest was abundant and bountiful with 457.5 pounds of red beets being distributed this week! Urban areas are often showcased in food insecurity, however, did you know that over 34 million people in the United States, including 9 million children, are food insecure? (Source: Feeding America) Rural communities are often hit the hardest, with limited access to grocery stores and fresh produce. That's why every contribution counts and urge avid gardeners to do the same. Why red beets? These vibrant vegetables are a nutritional powerhouse rich in essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and offer longer shelf life. By donating these red beets, we aim to provide my neighbors with not just food, but nutritious options that can improve their health and wellbeing. It's been inspiring to see the resilience of these plants and the gratitude from those who received them. In times of scarcity, it's the small acts of kindness that sow the seeds of hope and build stronger, healthier communities. 🪴 The wonder plant! 🪴 Sentayhu Belachew (48) knew that Gesho was a useful plant, his grandfather had a small shrub which he used to flavour Tej, the local honey beer. But when Sentayhu joined a small farmers group run by SUNARMA he learned it could do so much more. This included: 🪴 Its roots stabilised the land helping to prevent erosion. 🪴 The wood from the mature shrub could be used as firewood. 🪴 The ripe berry (that looks a bit like a Sloe from a Blackthorn) could be eaten if it was harvested before the birds feasted on it! 🪴 The attractive shrub gave shade which meant he could grow other plants in between the rows receiving shelter from the elements and helping conserve soil water moisture. 🪴 The bark has medicinal value including antimicrobial properties, alleviating inflammation, it is an anti-oxidant and even protects the liver!
