Did #England win? Did #England just not lose? It doesn’t matter. Because #GarethSouthgate and his team survived and thrived in a #crisis. A crisis of confidence from the fans; a crisis with the bottom line (highly paid players perceived to be delivering poorly) and an opponent many ‘stakeholders’ had already handed the win to. I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes (about #football generally to be honest) but I would be prepared to bet that tonight’s win has more to do with #GarethSouthgate and team #wargaming every move, pass and set piece before every match and tournament than it does about natty waistcoats. He heads up a business; a multi-million pound business. He has to try to plan for every eventuality or no performance = no sponsorship, no support, no ticket sales & rubbished reputation. #Planning, #riskassessment and wargaming must be integral to every single business, whether that’s in sport or any other sector or industry. I’m no #football fan but even I’ve heard the #Liverpool legend #BillShankly’s words: “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death… I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” On a roll with the hyperbole and drama of football, I would say so is business: A business without resilience planning can find itself left with nothing but a damning headline and a fragile bottom line because it didn’t foresee and practice the penalty line-up, because it didn’t consider different approaches for unpredictable opponents, or prepare for the unexpected. This weekend, I competed in a 40k tournament—5 intense games over 2 days against some of the best players in the country. When the games got tough and I thought I was beaten, the only option was to dig deep, adapt, and find a way to win. In the end, I secured my first GT 40k tournament victory! The same mindset applies to ticketing. Some customers come to your platform, eager to buy, but a last-minute glitch, payment issue, or ticketing error causes them to drop out, and you lose the sale. Others might be unsure at first, but they follow through and discover that your product is exactly what they want, leading to a successful transaction and a great experience.
