You know the saying “bad things happen when good people do nothing.” That’s the thought that drives me. Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Lagos Council called and we answered, resulting to a fruitful and result oriented discussions in managing waste to attain net zero and zero waste. In the course of the Eko Waste Summit 2024, discussions on integrating economic profitability into the concept of recycling and sustainability not only births economic opportunities but also transforms the state of living for the people and wellbeing of the environment_ a win win. Some recommendations for effective implementation of waste management discussed were: • To truely achieve net zero there must be intentional and collective efforts of all and sundry in properly managing their waste. With waste managers, enthusiasts and sustainability based innovators engineering the processes, developing policies, deploying policies, and de-risking together. • Government has a crucial and decisive role to play in strategies and policy implementation to checkmate non ecofriendly practices, support drivers of implementation and compliance to access funding, empower them and adequately enforce her own policies. • With the aim of effective, efficient and sustainable implementation, policies has to be well communicated and cascaded down, so that interpretation is understood by all levels. Clarity of what, why and how addresses the issues of frustration of environmental policies and implementation from the government itself, it’s own agencies, and especially the people. • There is the essence to develop waste management infrastructure from waste sorting, to collection, to incentivizing the process, and to proper disposal facilities (preferably waste treatment facilities that generate energy from waste) • Advocacy awareness and very importantly teaching the children, which includes adding sustainability, waste management, circularity, SDG in their curriculum. A panelist said, “When you teach children you have taught a nation.” The idea is to catch them young. 🏅Special appreciation to these organizations living the circularity we preach. Case Study Broll Nigeria's impactful partnership with Scrapays exemplifies this approach. Scrapays, a waste management company, diverts tons of waste from landfills for reuse in new projects.
