Our Collaboration with Google Recovery of post-consumer waste is complicated. Let's take the example of PET bottles, which have relatively high rates of recycling in India. However, only 5% of PET bottles are truly recycled (closed-loop, i.e., bottle-to-bottle)*. In our efforts to maximize resource recovery from PET bottles, we are piloting a quality control system powered by an AI/ML-based vision system. This initiative is in collaboration with Google and is leveraging CircularNet, the #AI model developed by Google. Here are further details published by Google. How does this work? When PET bottles enter the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), they are manually sorted on a conveyor belt into three grades based on their contamination levels. The AI-driven CircularNet system will identify contaminated bottles to ensure that good-quality feedstock is supplied to recyclers. Saahas Zero Waste carefully chooses tech-driven solutions, and we believe that CircularNet adds significant value to the system because recyclers are now willing to pay a 10% higher value for such quality feedstock. Project SAIM in #Goa has made considerable progress to address collection , aggregation recycling of dry waste. Our sales and marketing team recently had the privilege to learn from an expert team from SAP - Dr. Cornelia Martin Jaggi Singh Stefanie Kruijen. It was indeed an enlightening experience to learn from real life experiences, best practices and receiving pearls of wisdom on various practical hacks to sales. The weekly sessions offered a deep dive into marketing, business development and sales perspectives, helping us refine and perfect our sales pitch, sales process and approach. We also were able to validate some of our current understanding and sales practices and have been able to adopt learning that will only help us maximise impact through scaling our waste management services. Bringing attention to SDG 1 Today is marked as International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. At Saahas Zero Waste, our core mission is #wasterecovery and management, but we’re also driving a significant impact on #livelihoods through the dignified #employment we create. By integrating sustainability and social inclusion, we foster a holistic ecosystem where environmental protection and community upliftment go hand in hand. The Reality: In 2024, almost 129 million Indians are living in extreme #poverty, surviving on less than $2.15 a day (the international poverty line), according to the World Bank. Minimum wage laws in India often fail to meet basic needs, leaving many without a dignified standard of living. At Saahas Zero Waste, 60% of our workforce consists of field staff, many of whom were previously informal workers. By formalizing their roles, we provide fair wages, social security, and the opportunity for a dignified life. We are also proud of our internal policy that ensures fair income distribution, with a median salary ratio of 1:8, promoting equality within our organization. We were also recognised for our work and business model by Global Citizen Award by Waislitz for our efforts in elevating poverty through inclusive waste management But we can’t do it alone. Today, we call on our partners and clients to take collective action: Support Inclusive Waste Management: Choose partners that empower waste workers and promote fair wages.
