Crucial but often overlooked aspect of down rounds: the impact on employee stock options 🚀⤵ When the market value of your company drops below the exercise price of your options (a down round occurs), things get tricky —it's not just investors who feel the impact. As an employee may end up paying more for the stock than it's current worth 💰😱 Here's the dilemma every employee face: Do you take the risk and invest in a future turnaround? Or do you hold off, risking your options expiring worthless? For employees in a down round, here are some things to consider: 1️⃣ Stay informed: Understand the details of your stock options, such as the exercise price, expiration date, and any vesting conditions. 2️⃣ Seek advice: A financial advisor can guide you through the financial and tax implications of a down round. 3️⃣ Adopt a long-Term perspective: Evaluate the company's long-term potential before making any drastic decisions. 4️⃣ Tax Implications: Understand the tax consequences of exercising your options and holding vs. selling the stock immediately. 5️⃣ Alternative strategies: Explore if your company provides solutions for underwater options, such as repricing or exchange programs. Remember, a down round doesn't mean it's game over. Successful companies have bounced back before.
