The only successful tool I have seen churches use to circumvent local zoning, and landmark laws is to employee freedom of religion to assert their rights to carry out their mission while thwarting NIMBY friction. “Churches sometimes have it in their mind that they can build new space for themselves, build affordable housing and generate income,” said Mark Elsdon, cofounder of RootedGood, a Wisconsin-based organization that helps faith-based groups rethink their real estate resources. “Very often, you’re lucky to get one of those. Two would be a huge win. But all three?” “What’s holding up the church-to-housing pipeline? Bluntly, even God’s house has to abide by humankind’s zoning laws. Homelessness Week is fast approaching, and it’s an important time for each of us to stop and consider the plight of the tens of thousands of Australians currently sleeping rough, couch surfing or drifting between boarding houses and crisis accommodation. The theme for Homelessness Week this year is Act Now, and it couldn’t be more pertinent as we struggle to find solutions to address the extraordinary shortage of housing in our region and across the country. President's Post: In the words of Michael Block, the CEO of All Roads (formerly the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless), "Fighting homelessness can sometimes seem like pushing a big rock up a steep hill. On Wednesday, February 7th, the Red Oak DEI Action Committee hosted a special screening of the documentary, A Rising Tide. The film reveals, through the eyes of children and their families, the survival strategies they are forced to endure while struggling with homelessness in Alameda County. The film also shares the work and the challenges faced by local service providers, shedding light on the “helping industry” that has developed from the housing crisis here in the East Bay.
