Hydrangea macrophylla is perhaps the best-selling plant species in European garden centres. Boskoop-based De Jong Plant B.V. is one of the major suppliers, which also regularly introduces new, improved cultivars. Like now at the upcoming fair: Hydrangea macrophylla 'BC2401WIZ' (WIZARD) stands out in the Hydrangea macrophylla garden plant range for its long flowering period of at least 100 days, its unique bicoloured flower and re-blooming aspects. Flowering starts yellow-green after which WIZARD soon shows its bright pink flowers combined with yellow-green petals. After the 100 days of flowering, WIZARD colours through to a pale pink tone in autumn. The very strong branches and flowers mean that this Hydrangea can take a beating. The plant was won by Blooming Creations International B.V. of Boskoop. Plant breeders' rights protection has been applied for. WIZARD was submitted by Blooming Creations Int. Follow these steps for effective substrate layering: 1. Base Layer: Start with a nutrient-rich base layer. Use nutrient substrate or specialized plant substrate to support plant growth. This layer typically consists of about 1 to 2 inches of substrate and serves as a source of essential nutrients for rooted plants. 2. Aesthetic Layer: Add a layer of fine-grained or decorative substrate on top of the base layer. This layer, usually about 1 inch thick, contributes to the visual appeal of the aquarium. Choose a substrate color and texture that complements the overall aquascape design. 3. Sloping Terrain: To create a natural look and a sense of depth, slope the substrate higher towards the back of the aquarium and gradually lower it towards the front. This helps in creating visually interesting landscapes and provides different planting areas. 4. Planting Area: Identify areas where you plan to plant rooted aquarium plants. Plant these directly into the nutrient-rich base layer, ensuring their roots have access to essential nutrients for optimal growth. 5. Sand Cap (Optional): If you want to use a finer substrate like sand, consider adding a thin layer (about 0.5 to 1 inch) on top of the planted areas. This acts as a cap, preventing the nutrient-rich substrate from mixing with the sand while providing a smooth surface for delicate plants. 6. Smooth Transition: Blend the substrate layers smoothly to create a seamless transition between them. This will result in a more natural and visually pleasing appearance. 7. Fill with Water Carefully: When filling the aquarium with water, use a plate or bowl to disperse the water gently. This minimizes disturbance to the substrate layers, preventing cloudiness.
