The end of January 2024 is the final call for papers for the ‘Responses to Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking’ Conference - Tuesday, 26th March 2024.   Over the past five years, the UK has seen a rapidly changing policy and legislative landscape regarding ‘modern slavery’ and human trafficking, with the issues being conflated with immigration crime, emphasis being placed on (and subsequently removed) requiring objective evidence for referrals into the National Referral Mechanism, and an increasingly restrictive system of accessing victim care contract support for those who suffer significant trauma as a result of their experiences. Now is the time to get involved. We welcome contributions for posters and papers for this one-day interdisciplinary conference which will explore current responses to issues of ‘modern slavery’, human trafficking, and extreme forms of exploitation.   More information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eTWDM2uB

The Law on the Protection of Civilian Victims of War in the Federation of #BosniaAndHerzegovina came into effect on January 1st, 2024 This Law brings significant changes for victims of #WarCrimes: we once again highlight the recognition of the status of civilian victims of war for children born as a result of war-time #rape and the improvement of the rights of civilian victims of war (including medical rehabilitation). One of the most significant challenges in the coming period is to ensure uniform application of the basic rights defined by this Law in all cantons of #FBiH. TRIAL International will monitor the implementation of the Law and take part in additional discussions between representatives of victims' associations and competent authorities in order to point out possible challenges in a timely manner.

As the National Transitional Justice Symposium held in February from 20-21, 2024 demonstrated, there are pathways for implementing Uganda Transitional Justice Policy. Various communities in Uganda need to be guided to lasting peace and stability by resolving legacies of past violence and multi-layered grievances stemming from egregious human rights violations.  Through a plurality of local justice efforts and accountability mechanisms consistent with judicial sovereignty, healing and reconciling communities that suffered conflict and mass violations can rebuild broken lives and relationships. It will also be necessary to make effective and unambiguous efforts and commitments in order to develop a comprehensive reparations framework.

📢 OUT TODAY: I Have Rights team member Ellen Allde's article, ‘Sanctioned Ignorance’ and the detention of people seeking asylum in the EU-funded CCAC on Samos. In the article, the author highlights the context of detention of people on the move inside the Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC). In particular: 🔁 People living in the Samos CCAC are facing sudden and constant changes of rules regarding entry or exit of the facility, food provision, asylum interview dates. ⏳ People are also subjected to prolonged wait times for asylum appointments, interpreters, food, medical support and entry and exit from the CCAC. In light of this context, Allde develops Gayatri Spivak’s concept of ‘sanctioned ignorance’ to consider how the constant changes and prolonged waiting in the CCAC contribute to and exacerbate the undignified conditions of detention. ➡️ Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/e-kKeqbH

Just back from Zagreb where I had the privilege to give an opening speech and to participate in discussion panels at the annual conference of Victim Support Europe This year event of Victim Support Europe, organised together with Croatian Udruga za podršku žrtvama i svjedocima was entitled Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Once again, it proved to be an excellent forum to exchange on victims’ rights among top EU and world-wide practitioners and experts on the topic. Some takeaways 🔊 : ✔ Strengthening cooperation and coordination between national authorities and civil society as well as among victim support organizations - crucial for provision of quality services to victims.  ✔ National strategies on victims’ rights, protocols, and a recognition of victim support as general services of public interest are already present in many EU countries - to be followed by all. ✔ We must capitalize on people willing to volunteer – notably considering numerous budgetary cuts on victim support. #VSEAC2024 #EUVictimsRights

Torturable subjects and Pyschotic Pockets. Extremely happy to see this get published on the 19th of June ... Abstract This chapter explores the proposition that Australia’s abusive treatment of refugees and asylum seekers can be traced back to a denial of the foundational violence of colonisation. By adopting a psychoanalytic frame, the research explores three questions: is Australia engaging in cruel, degrading and humiliating treatment of asylum seekers, a treatment that devolves into torture? If so, how is this operationalised? And finally what does the abuse satisfy within the state? The work uses Freud’s paper, ‘Mourning and Melancholia’, and Melanie Klein’s work on the paranoid/schizoid position to describe the psycho-affective terrain from which this abuse emanates. The chapter takes this psycho-affective terrain as the foundation and then investigates the impact the privatised detention regime has had in enabling the known/unknowability of the abuse and mechanisms at work within media practice to create ‘torturable subjects’ (Mendiola, 2014, p. 13).
