#UrbanHealth: A key topic to promote people's health through space As cities continue to grow, it is crucial to adopt an Urban Health technical-design approach. At the Design & Health Lab, we are dedicated to promoting environmentally friendly design strategies that limit health risk factors. Our objective is to enhance awareness among stakeholders about the factors influencing #PublicHealth in cities. We use an interdisciplinary scientific approach, combining the expertise of designers and public health experts. Our research includes developing evaluation #tools, conducting observational studies, creating forecasting models, and assessing the impact of #urbanspace reconfiguration. Join us in our mission to create healthier and more livable cities through innovation and research! 🌱🏙️ Stefano C. Today we celebrate #WorldHabitatDay! By setting meaningful and actionable #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature, cities can pave the way for healthier citizens, flourishing economies and thriving natural habitats. Learn more about our cities program. 👇 Safeguarding our natural habitats and resources is pivotal for maintaining a livable planet for humankind. But it is also key for building livable cities, where vibrant communities thrive. By setting meaningful and actionable targets for nature, cities can pave the way for healthier citizens, flourishing economies, and attractive cities that sustain a high quality of life. 🌇 We launched a program to develop cities-focused science-based targets for nature in 2023. Advancing the scope to include cities, alongside companies, the new cities’ science-based targets for nature program’s first objective is to create a holistic, guidance build on existing frameworks that can help cities navigate the best target setting methodologies for nature. We expect initial guidance for cities to be available in 2025. 🌱 The Cities’ science-based targets for nature program is a collaborative effort with some of the world’s leading cities networks, research institutions, and advisory organizations focused on cities: CDP, WWF, WRI, C40, ICLEI, IUCN, Durham University, TNC, and Arup. At the heart of the consortium, Metabolic and Urban Biodiversity Hub will act as core delivery partners. 🔗 Learn more about the program: https://lnkd.in/e3ZBYHAb 📧 Subscribe to our cities newsletter to stay up to date on program progress and future events: https://lnkd.in/evSuYCGi

🔬 Exploring Longevity through Frequency Harmonization 🌍 We’re on the verge of a breakthrough in understanding how environmental conditions impact health and life expectancy. Our latest experiment tests the effects of different environments on subjects—one with noise pollution, one neutral, and one that emits the Earth’s Schumann resonance along with harmonized frequencies. The goal? To uncover whether aligning our living spaces with natural frequencies could enhance human longevity and well-being. Imagine future smart cities and homes designed to optimize health through harmony with the Earth’s resonance. Stay tuned as we push the boundaries of what’s possible in habitat design and health! 🌱 #LifeSciences #SchumannResonance #EnvironmentalHealth #Longevity #Innovation #SmartCities

Last week's Urban Future Forum was a success. My goal in leading one of the event discussions was to inspire a collective willingness to forge a shared vision for the future, with planetary health as the ultimate aligned incentive (needless to say). A core philosophy of my work is that there is no single, predetermined future awaiting us; our futures are shaped by our beliefs, actions, and collaborations. We've all seen and experienced stifled innovation due to organizational silos or polarizing behaviors like finger-pointing. Our futures desperately need us to liberate ourselves from that way of operating. Our discussion encouraged a free flow of ideas across different fields and sectors, acknowledging the tension this can bring but also recognizing its value in exploring the unknowns of new technologies, practices, and policies. We must learn to talk to people whose positions we may not understand and stretch each other's horizons -- it all plays a part in the outcomes we seek. We also emphasized the importance of community voices, especially those from systemically marginalized groups disproportionately affected by climate change. The future requires an open-door policy to embrace and listen to these communities, as their unique perspectives can accelerate efforts that benefit us all. More of this. All thanks again to the team at Urban Future Lab.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Neighbourhood Futures: A framework for climate resilience and health equity, in partnership with Impact on Urban Health. This framework is designed to build climate resilience in cities, empowering practitioners to work across disciplines and create resilient and healthy urban environments. The framework introduces five key capacities—Threshold, Coping, Recovery, Adaptive, and Transformative—that help cities better absorb climate impacts and shape resilient futures for their diverse communities. Developed through close collaboration with the team at Impact on Urban Health, and teams across Ramboll, the project was led by the Regenerative Cities team - Shira de Bourbon Parme, Urban Wellbeing and Innovation Lead, Amanda Karen Chan, Senior Environmental Consultant and Rebecca Dillon-Robinson, Principal Urban Planner, and Lisa Ha, Urban Designer and William Allen, Lead Building Physicist. Philippa Spence, Managing Director Environment & Health at Ramboll, says: “Now is the time to ensure neighbourhoods are prepared for climate change. Practitioners need to think creatively while working together across sectors to protect communities.” Learn more and download the full framework here: https://lnkd.in/eHWgia6n #climateresilience #sustainablecities #neighbourhoodfutures #urbanplanning #climateaction

In 2021, I joined #NATURANetwork natura-net.org, a wonderful global community of researchers and practitioners of #naturebasedsolutions (NBS). Today, I’m really excited to be part of a pivotal moment of NATURA, as we gather in Miami for the All-Hands Meeting 2024 to reflect back and rethink the future of NBS in cities. As I get ready for the exciting days to come, I keep in mind 3 reflections on NBS that I will bring during my participation: #Multispecies thinking in NBS NBS can be an opportunity to heal the nature-city divide, but also a failed attempt at transcending anthropocentric urbanism. We need to phase out the ideas of human superiority that have justified our domination and exploitation of nature. We need to challenge NBS practice to design for nature, as nature and with nature, together. Design for nature means to acknowledge more-than-human species and systems as clients and stakeholders, and to create the conditions to care for their needs, to co-exist and thrive together. Design as nature means to acknowledge and collaborate with the cognitive agency of more-than-human species. And design with nature entails a shift from designing with parts to growing regenerative habitats with living systems. Many species are better “architects” than we are, so let´s learn from and collaborate with them. #Embodiment for NBS We need to go beyond an information-centric way of knowing in science which perpetuates our distance with nature. We may have growing scientific information of biodiversity in cities, but is that really expanding our empathy? A multispecies approach in NBS needs embodied ways of knowing, that is multisensory experiences that reconnect our minds and hearts to more-than-human worlds. Let’s reclaim the power of our senses to feel our entanglements with nature. Let’s imagine what it would be like to embody the sensorial worlds of other species as an exercise of empathy. #Democratizing NBS The word “NBS” shouldn't be a gatekeeper, another label in sustainability science and practice that creates more knowledge silos and top-down design and planning. I believe in the power of democratizing design and technology to put the power of transforming cities in the hands of everyone. The right to the city is also the right to transform its future. Let´s re-imagine who are the designers, let´s pave the way for more just and inclusive cultures in NBS
